Book Review: "Just The Nicest Couple" By Mary Kubica

Mary Kubica nailed it! A superb craftsmanship of spine-tingling action, suspense, & intrigue!

Rich with detail, full of suffocating dilemmas, and served up on nothing less than mom's classic china!
Hot damn!

I love when the matriarch isn't just there for fluff but actually plays more of a 'critical and engaging' role.

What truly goes on behind closed doors is a question that is very relatable for those of us who were abused or even for those who have knowledge of someone else in this particular toxic relationship.

We have two power couples in this one : Nina/Jake Hayes and on the other side of the ring is Lily/Christian Scott.

These 4 in essence are the power grabbers after Jake goes missing.

In fact, everyone seems perplexed with something to hide and nobody seems to want to come clean.
Blood doesn't easily rinse off from clothes so going to the cleaners ain't an option but we don't truly know what happened to Jake.

The bread crumbs lead us to some shiny jewelry, some possible affairs, some heated verbal discussions, and might I say some off the chart explanations to where Jake might have gone.

While I did figure out that there won't be an extra table setting at the next dinner party (enter sarcasm lightly) I did learn that Lily and Christian have finally settled the score.

One got off, one got an eternal gift that will connect them for life, and well who cares about the rest.

No, seriously, Jake might be the narcissitic egotistical here but I've had that myself after 11 yrs. and I wouldn't wish harm.

Many revieweres felt Jake got what he deserved but in the end perhaps the grass wasn't always greener.
With some help from close family and friends I'm sure that Nina will carry on just fine. Unfortunately, the family dynamic might have been strained but that's to be expected.

All's fair in love and war!

Till we meet again!

Book Review: "To Catch A Storm" By Miny Mejia

Physicist meets psychic and all holy hell breaks loose!

This new thriller by the one of the best thriller authors out there begins with two missing people in the midst of an ice storm.

Main character/suspect #1- Eve Roth- spouse/physicist is under suspicion for the disappearance of Matthew Moore her husband.
It appears his car was found engulfed in flames and abandoned.
Past reports indicate he's been suspended for inappropriate conduct with a student.

Bring in #2 character - Jonah Kendrick - Psychic and Uncle who is determined to find answers from beyond the grave if he must.
Just think a psychic and a physicist exploding into action to form a team .

However, this isn't child's play and this ain't the first rodeo for Mejia! She brings the suspense, the engagement, she put you front and center of it all!!

Let's cut to the chase...There may be something behind the scenes here. You might say to look under the floorboards, behind every barn, and hell look out in the labs because there's something brewing.
Don't you remember that lava experiment...from science class...pop, fiz, bubble over.

What we have here is some interconnected workings on the part of some shady folks.

Shoot, there's affairs, car accidents, murders, mayhem, drug action, and more.

In fact, in order to make money you have to put money into that pot -sorta speak, right?

I'll tell you what I think for the two cents it's worth. Do me a favor, stop what you're doing, and add this to your TBR in whatever format you choose.

Because we may have started with two missing but if my memory serves me right we have at least 3 dead!

This was a book that I won't soon forget because the twisty vibes ran through this like a damn freight train off the tracks!

Thank you to Mindy Mejia, Grove Atlantic, Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

To Catch A Storm is due out in the USA: August 1st 2023

Book Review: "Silver Nitrate" By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Truth is stranger than fiction but in the same breath we must realize the pen is also mightier than the sword! Both are true in this case with Silvia Moreno-Garcia taking us into a world all her own.

Mexican Gothic https://thesecretbooksleuth.blogspot.com/search?q=mexican+gothic was one heck of a spellbinding, mind blowing, magical ride that took me beyond wizards and warlords.

Silver Nitrate somehow builds upon that magic and catapults us into a new realm!

The boys club was something that Montserrat wanted to leave behind as a sound editor to run a film industry in Mexico. She felt invisible to Tristan the faded soap opera star and wanted to make a contribution to the world of film.

However, she didn't bank on the fact that lies were part of the process. That magic in and of itself might not be enough. That death may not be final but actually might include being reincarnated to ive in the present among us.

End a curse and finish a movie scene didn't seem that big of a hurdle for Montserrat and Tristan until uncovering she's got a presence following her and Tristan seeing his ex-girlfriend's ghost. Was it simply his past drug addiction coming back to haunt him? Should he invest in psychiatric treatment considering his girlfriends been dead for the past 10 years?

Sorcerer's magic is made to come alive through the use of nitrate stock creating a glowing scene -a conduit of spells that burst into flames. Silver nitrate is highly flammable but was cheap to produce so it was highly sought after in the 50's.

Ewers is the man with the plan that everyone believed was dead. A magician on film that wore a pendant. Ewers is not just any leader. He's part of this magical world in which we now see similar comparisons to mediums today.

A world in which yellow is favored by the author but in which green was sometimes used. A world that cast spells upon others and creates delusions for some.

Cultists, Nazi's, and magicians are all presented in spectacular fashion as readers become entranced in the spellbinding mission of ordinary to extraordinary.

What can one say is that it's simply more than mere blood magic, right?

Never give your power away through fear!!

"Words are also ritual, gestures are spells."

Air, earth, water, life, the opener...Sci-fi and fantasy will live on.

Could this be nothing more than a thief in plain site? Or, is this something far worse?

Ahh, momo you steal my heart.

Thank you to Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Random House Publishing, and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: " The House Across the Lake" By Riley Sager

I literally feel like I was just sucker punched in the gut! Wow! That was quite something from one Pennsylvanian to a native one!

Folks, this ain't the lake where your parents come to retire...Nope, this lake has depth, despair, and distraction.

The House Across the Lake is quite fitting for a country bumpkin born & raised with lakefront property across the street. So, to get you into the mood/feel you'll need to grab your binoculars, check up on your neighbors, & a grab a seat because the show's about to start.

I seriously was going along with the flow (no pun intended) until midway when this book took off like a jet liner coming into Avoca Airport!

Hot damn, East Stroudsburg couples ain't got nothing on Wilkes- Barre residents & if you need proof just watch 'On Patrol Live' as we've been the hot feature for weeks now.

In all seriousness, these characters are to die for, gosh darn, I meant to say they're so darn real..., No, I mean to say, they're so dark and conniving! Yes, that's the ticket. LOL! Enter sarcasm here.

In fact, I wouldn't be glancing over your shoulder just yet but I would be shaking in the boots as things are getting hairy, wet, and wild.

"Not so fast" is a saying we often hear used elsewhere not with thrillers. In this case, it was creeping with that stalkish feel until the lights went out, the souls departed, the ghostly beings came through, wait...what?!

I'm sorry my thoughts escaped me, lol. I must be imagining things. Or, am I?

If you thought Home Before Dark was hot ... https://thesecretbooksleuth.blogspot.com/2020/07/book-review-home-before-dark-by-riley.html

Or, that Lock Every Door enticed your senses you might just be in for a shocker!  https://thesecretbooksleuth.blogspot.com/2019/07/book-review-lock-every-door-by-riley.html

As we say here in NEPA -you ain't seen nothin' yet. Heyna?!

Now, I won't hold it against the author/publisher that they won't provide ARC's to this speed reader with over 100% feeback at Netgalley while having over 1,300 books read in 2020 via Goodreads prior to having medical issues (temp leg paralysis/herniated disc/robotic hysterectomy) in '21 or that my pop now has end stage spinal cancer as a navy vet & we're prayin' he makes it till Spring for my son's 4 yr. college degree because in all fairness people don't realize The Secret Book Sleuth is the same one from 2015 who deleted her account '21 for these reasons expressed.

Now, I'm back on my feet but I can't say the same for the characters.

Many reviewers including myself do feel slighted with the start of this one. It did seem sluggish with the same setting of a drunk female character "Cee" trying to find her way after her hubby Len passed. The grieving widow may not be all she's cracked up to be.

However, with this noted we also must understand that we have two different avenues to explore and two different families & sure as rain it came together in hard core fashion.

The Royce family is hiding some misgivings with some hatred flowing upstream while Casey Fletcher is trying to have her cake and eat it too.

Dang girl! You can't have it both ways can you, I mean men have for years, right?

When these two live across Lake Greene from one another we know that there's more than fireworks being set off.

Supermodels and actresses are a thing of the past for these two ladies yet, they seem to have some similarities in their choice of spouses and in terms of what they're willing or not to accept in marriage.

Some women simply put their foot down while others sink the whole damn boat! This often leads to a train wreck of victims if you're not willing to take care of biz & end the cycle of abuse.

Therefore, I can only offer this...grab a copy from your local library & ENJOY.

Thank you Osterhout Free Library for this copy.

She's out till we meet again...

Book Review: "Girl, Forgotten" By Karin Slaughter

Karin Slaughter.....I see you!! That was fantastic!

What's not to like when Karin is behind the wheel both literally and figuratively in this newest piece the second in the Andrea Oliver series.

Learning to fly and spreading those wings is the end game. However, to get there you must fall down more than a few times.

Life isn't easy for these ladies and gents especially around prom night. Hell, we've all been there except me ( I wasn't into dressing up /tomboy at heart) however, Emily Vaughn seemed to be the life of the party. One of the cool kids! A gal you'd like to get to know better and spend some quality time.

This ain't rainbows as we learn upon uncovering she's been murdered.

The story rotates through timelines (past '82/present) with both holding their own quite well for readers.
The key is to not lose sight of the prize. The ultimate goal. The reason we're all searching for answers is to uncover the reasoning behind Emily's death.

Karin Slaughter enjoys spotlighting important topics within her characters debt and this is no exception in Girl, Forgotten.

At the ripe age of eighteen, partying with friends, and hanging out could lead to some things. Some terrible consequences to the iniation process as some like to call it. To prove you're cool you must do some things to excite the base.

Folks, this girl may have been drugged but the culprit ain't answering important questions.
Not yet, but he/she must face the heat because the justice hammer is falling hard and fast.
Hiding isn't an option, running won't get you far, and lying your arse off will only make the hole you're digging bigger!

Come clean...

Nick, Clay, Jack, Star Bonaire,...

Oh, wait a second...Judith Rose has arrived?! Ok, things just became exponentially real!
Hold up...Eric Blakely has a what..?

OMG! Clay is best bud's with Jack but hot damn what are we bearing judgement too?
I'm not so sure I can spill anything else but I'll tell ya what- Go out and get a copy!

Drugs, drinking, sex, abuse, and danger is lurking everywhere and I can't help but hope someone comes out unscaved!

Perhaps it's wishful thinking or perhaps someone is flanning the flames! Psycho's are watching--time to run!

Book Review: "Mad Honey" By Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan

There's a reason this was selected as Goodread's Choice Award nominee for best fiction 2022!

Jodi Picoult may have been a copauthor with Jennifer Finney Boylan doing the leg work but that doesn't mean you can not give her any credit here.

I love how this began with Olivia (single mom x 12 yrs) raising her son Asher after an abusive relationship ends with his dad Branden.

The fact that their son Asher is facing murder charges for the death of his girlfriend Lily is truly a shocker or is it being his dad was abusive?

Mad Honey brings many different topics to the table and some have criticized this hodge-podge of discussions but they're important to discuss and no greater time than NOW!

Abuse is not something to take lightly. As a surivor myself I wish we had more authors willing to work together to address not only domestic violence but single parenting, LGBTQ/Transgender issues, and bullying to name just a few.

I just had a total hysterectomy myself this past June ergo the partial reasoning for my departure from Goodreads/Netgalley all last year. My shock at uncovering the truth about Lily not having a uterus/ovaries was something I thought I could relate with until the plot twist entered the segway.

It was at that moment that I realized this is going to get damn good in a hurry because you could see the 'writing on the wall' sort of speak. You knew that this was a hot topic area and that many trans are losing their rights, their love interest, their lives simply for being different. I suppose it was a hot topic because my Zumba instructor's daughter was trans. I watched her grow up and transition to a man around 17-18 yo just like in this book. It was something I've never experienced before until watching her daughter and the pain in her face is still evident today.

That wayward feeling of never quite belonging, not knowing who or what you are, having to feel different among your peers, and having to defend yourself from those who find it easy to throw shade.

Not only is this book raising light to such important topics but it addresses the bees. Sadly, our bee population is dwindling. We have many bee hive keepers in my area & I'm thrilled to see this in the book .
As a few other readers pointed out the writings are short. The sentences are easily structured and precise. It reads much like a James Patterson novel so don't be fooled by having over 400 pages to go through as it's quick and enjoyable.

As someone who also was a public defender intern it's with great pride that I enjoyed reading the court hearing notes, the trial selection, the verdict, and everything in between from in defending this young man's life with a few tricks up their sleave involving a blood disorder.

Those who may or may not know me might recall the high number of medical issues that I suffer from and one is in having microcytic hypochromic anemia with petechia as mentioned in this book. I was never told I had TTP but I do have blood clotting issues and currently suffer from inflammation/arthritis in my R hand and back. It's so bad that I had paraysis in both legs in Dec '21 so again, I could relate to this book on a multitude of issues.

The question about how Lily died upon being found at the bottom of the stairs was up for debate alongside the killer's motive but in the end that truth won out.

I won't give the ending away but suffice to say it's a shocker that wasn't easily predicted -at least not for me.
What I can say is to never be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and read a book with an interesting premise/preview. You might just be shocked to uncover yourself learning something new in the process that you might not have understood fully.

My kids are older in college and both are dating age with significant others in their lives. It's not to far fetched as a single parent to say I always worry for both my son and my two girls in this crazy world.
Taking a break sometimes is a good thing to stop and smell the roses.

That ending with the confession & the bee conotation for moving forward was splendid. Reminds me of a peace offering & Lord knows we need more of that these days.

Please don't forget to support public libraries. Thank you to Osterhout Free Library for this hardcover edition.

Book Review: "The House of Wolves" By James Patterson

If you're heavily into football it's a win! However, if you're not the 'betting kind' with limited knowledge on the owners/franchises/etc...but occasionally watch on a Sunday night then you might want to move on.

While I couldn't get into the sporting theme, I did enjoy the female protagonist Jenny, and her three brothers determined to take her off the 'totem pole' as the head leader of the Wolves Team as well as The San Francisco Tribune. An arse kicker in her own right! Tough as nails! Determined to get that VOTE!

I've always read Patterson for the thrills not the politics, not the sports, not the romance and so when he ventures off with other writers it's a hit-or-miss scenario for me. In this case, signing on with a sports journalist you'll get what you paid for & that's what we got here.

Much of the quote lines were redundant & in fact, quoted as such by the authors yet, the real gamer if you will was in the shocking sudden deaths of some of the football players. If only we stayed on that topic longer I might've bumped the rating.

The fact that these guys are having heart issues on the field from cardiomyopathy that's been in the news recently was the ticking bomb we needed.

In addition, the side step with the father's death and the constant Cantor interview requests was a bit sluggish.
There was some effort to re-right the ship from sinking but the helm went under after Thomas (one of the three siblings of Jack, Danny, & Jenny) was found dead at the stadium.

There's the typical and expected romp but nothing that went overboard in that sense followed by some drug issues but it all seemed splashed together rather than free flowing.

After that people are just coming out of the woodwork. Falling off cliffs, being blackmailed, accusations wildly thrown out there in the wild, all while banging out old grievances and gripes in order to knock one another off.
We do learn who killed who in the end with much surprise about the voting system but all in all for me it was just mediocre.

Hopefully, the next one will have more thrills/chills for those of us who enjoy that genre.

Book Review: "The Whispers" By Ashley Audrain

Holy burning pancakes...What did I just read?!

I've heard of a romp in the hay ...but a romp in the backyard is a new twist!

Things are certainly heating up around here and I have to thank Ashley Audrain for this wonderful new book addressing just some of what mothers endure.

As a single mom of three, a weekend only former spouse, a woman who was told she's nothing more than a kept woman and a biz partner never a wife ...Trust me I feel the pain much like these characters.

That raw, emotional, deeply excruciating pain from childbirth, to childrearing, to empty nesters.

I've got to hand it too you each of these characters are complex yet relatable and so darn exciting to uncover.
Four families each with a story to tell at a neighborhood party for that turns into a trip to the hospital.

What we learn throughout this process is that nothing is as it seems.

The tiny cracks are enlarging with each new piece until finally an explosion of emotion and turmoil.

Don't rock the boat might be a great verbage but in this case the windows are rattling within the eyes of a child.
How could this all happen? What part of selfish desires don't you understand...Ok, hear me out. This is not the 'eye for an eye' is it?

Ahhh, I'm not releasing anything more but suffice to say you everyone hears, "The Whispers."

Thank you Ashley Audrain, Viking Books, and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "Don't You Dare" By Jessica Hamilton

Don't you Dare is the newest thriller by Jessica Hamilton that comes in and goes out with a BANG!

It begins with besties -Hannah and Scarlett- and some crazy college games like Truth or Dare but you can say with a twist.

Drinks are being poured. Stalkers are staked out in bushes. Personal files and personal photos are being shared. Homes are being robbed.
Oh, did I mention lives are being destroyed. Kids are involved. Marital affairs are plentiful.

Can I just get a cup of tea to go? lol....

No, seriously this is why I don't drink!

Revenge, jealousy, drama, nosy neighbors and yes death.

However, first we must learn that Daring Games aren't all they're cracked up to be. Someone is always getting hurt. One guy Thomas Sutton was expelled.

Yet, we find that 16 yrs. later that that past can creep back and destroy us because everyone has a story to tell and a secret too keep hidden.

Just ask Hannah as she sets sail with Evan and kids on a new journey. Until, she's facing divorce after receiving a letter from Thomas.

Three-somes, sexual encounters, it's all too much for some but happily shared with others.

The private background on Hannah and even on Rob's brother Jefferson was something else that added so much fuel to this growing fire.

The fact that Jefferson was seriously injured in an accident creates plenty of friction and rubs more than a few the wrong way.

That ending was a shocker as Jessica Hamilton puts us on the HOT SEAT of this game Truth or DARE with someone taking the fall.
Whom will be the next to step right up...or , shall we say, take the fall....

Thank you to Jessica Hamilton, Crooked Lane Books, Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

This newest work comes out in May 2023! Add to TBR!

Book Review: "The Whittiers" By Danielle Steel

The Whittiers brings to light love, loss, and family ties that are never broken!

It begins with Preston/Constance Whittier who built an empire for their 6 grown kids. They're now empty nesters.

Lyle- eldest son- is soon divorcing with 2 kids with Amanda.
Gloria- is a Wall Street professional but single at 40 years.
Twins- Caroline/Charlie see fashion biz falling
While Benjie (28 years) is a special needs child. Annabelle their daughter is a college drop out.

We travel through time as an avalanche kills their parents & places each of their children in a precarious spot.

As we progress we find nuggets to their individualities that leap off the paper & capture our hearts. Whether it's gender issues, pregnancy, adoption, child abuse, dating/relationship or otherwise. Everyone is dealing with something that requires attention as we follow them through the trials and tribulations of life following their parents deaths.

I enjoyed how the ending immensely & hope you do too.

Thank you Bibliotheca for this reader's copy.

Book Review: "Lethal Range" By Ryan Steck

Dear Ryan Steck: from one Mitch Rapp Ambassador to another, one blogging/reviewing thriller genre partner to another, & as someone you know who calls the shots from the hip this was one hell of a fantastic thriller read.

As a newbie author I was expecting a mediocre book and man, I was pleasantly surprised. I know we've always been competing against one another for the greatest in this genre but you my friend, should be applauded. You put your heart and soul on the line and it shows especially in your acknowledgements that required more than one Kleenex.

In fact, if I might be so blunt as to say this was one of the best thrillers I've read this year & I've read many of our favorites that we share in this genre.

I wasn't able to get my hands on a copy for your 1st novel in this Matthew Redd Series because I came on board too late but perhaps somewhere down the line I'll get my hands on a copy for Fields of Fire as I'd love to review that one too. This does stand well on its own without needing to have read the first one and it took me along for the ride quite well.

Matthew Redd is not too overbearing nor obnoxious with the ego filled -shoot everything up- nature that we see in many other works in this genre. For that reason alone is why I couldn't put it down.
At first the introduction I felt like perhaps you'd become too similar in nature to our fav C.J. Box but as it progressed you separated yourself and created your own niche.

Lethal Range was a fun filled, action packed, fireball that couldn't be put back down once you picked it up!

Suffice to say, it all began with Matthew Redd and the FBI team surveiling a villa in Spain to catch a fugitive. However, it may just be a trap!

Redd's wife -Emily- is taken over by the Infidels (biker gang) who surround her vehicle on a sick appointment drive to the doctors.
Redd feels compelled to blame himself for putting everyone in harms way while everything seems to be riding on his shoulders as the man of the house (cabin).

Strength in numbers is the name of the game as war rages on.
I enjoyed the settings, the fullness of the characters, the evolving plot that wasn't forced but felt naturally flowing freely.

As readers are met with one after another of high staked action that came at us from all angles.

The fact that their just might be a mole is equally engaging because it creates a new dynamic to the storyline. A mole in the FBI? Always being two steps ahead of Redd...it must be, Right?

The mission was to hunt down Anton Gage but as we learn pressure is coming up on all sides of the Montana Ranch that Redd owns.
"Stand Down" "Baby Boy" is a phrase I'd thought I'd never hear used simultaneously but it worked! Angry Johnny also was a firecracker and perhaps the buffalo stomping is just what we need.

With that said, there's no lack of luster as we continue to ratchet it up with another situation on the helm. Food supply disruption, drones, and of course, engineering efforts for profit.

The Infidels as they're known are not your average biker gang. They rise above law and order from a weakened society that prevents suppression. They're an outlaw group of criminals and must be stopped.

Redd knows this will take everything he has including life and limb to succeed as honor demands revenge.

I love the Bobbie-Sue character who was a gal with limited knowledge of the true actions behind the gang. A woman in a male dominated world in which brothers should never attack their own.

So, we're left to "focus, fight smart" and carry on carefully through every field and every step at or near their compound.

One wrong step could mean the end especially for the world's food supply.

Death by starvation? Could that be coming? Should we be concerned?
There's 12 members that may or may not be found but the thrill of the chase is what keeps readers glued to every single page.

The fact that the ranch also played a crucial role wasn't lost here. This ranch signified so much more than a mere location for Redd.

I won't spill out too much but will close with a quote, " But you'd do it for me and if a man can't fight for his friends and family, then what kind of man is he?"

My friend, I ask myself this question daily in more ways than one.

Congrats on this second in the series and thank you for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Give your 6 kiddos and wife all my love xo till we meet again.

Book Review: "The Last Party" By Clare Macintosh

The Last Party blew my doors down!

It was swift, sudden, and with that bloody secret hauting the chilling waters from a depth that might never be recovered!

Look, one person's dead. A New Year's Eve party gone horribly wrong.
Or, so you might think because karma is a biotch.

I'm not playing around here as these characters are out for blood. Each with an entirely different motive to kill.
It was all pretty damning to see each one profess innocence yet, each carried a heavy weight around on their shoulders.

Sexual abuse is mentioned along with murder for those that might be squeamish.

Just who killed Lloyd and why is the central piece to this elusive puzzle that captures readers inquiring minds!

Was it a friend, family member, neighbor? What was the murder weapon? Where is the remaining evidence?
That ending was the bomb! The one that truly sinks all ships! The takedown with Hulkster running wild in the backdrop!

Thank you to Bibliotheca for this copy.

Book Review: "beyond that, the sea" By Laura Spence -Ash

Beyond That, the Sea is a remarkable piece by the wonderful author Laura Spence-Ash.

To say this audio version was captivating, dynamic, and powerful beyond words is an understatement.
Sometimes, I like to multi task while listening but then I lose my train of thought when listening. Not with this one as it's read so eloquently that it requires your undivided attention.

The story begins with a young lady named Beatrix (11 yo. daughter) who is sent to live with her new family the Gregory's and their two boys William (13yo) & 9 yo Gerald.

It's set during WWII at a time when of the war when everything was on end.
Nobody knew what life would be like moving forward and everyone gave each other all they had to simply get by and assist in whatever fashion that required.

The plot grows exponentially with each new development within these two families from tragedy, heartbreak, and everything in between including divorce and death.

It was not too long thereafter when we learn there's been a tragic car accident and a member of the family passes.

Traveling to Maine becomes the highlight to processing the pain.

These families lived parallel lives yet managed to find that through it all they never lost sight of the shore or the memories they held close to the sleeve.

Thank you to Laura Spence-Ash, the narrator Ell Potter, the publisher Macmillan Audio & NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "The Block Party" By Jamie Day

Best book read in 2023!!! The Block Party brings the excitement with one hell of a party. So much so that I think I might want to relocate to their world.

Let me tell you guys, everything is flying! Bullets, Bodies, Lies, Fireworks, Romance, Divorces or was that Pre-Nups...and so much more! Notice the caps for emphasis -yes, it was that good!

Let me set this up for you: I'm hogging down on a bag of chips when I couldn't put them in my mouth fast enough to keep up with the pace of this book. I was so invested I have to go back and vacuum after this review. I kid you NOT! I literally turned to my college age son and said, "This book is fantastic!" I couldn't depart to even get the darn mail that was just delivered...Lol

Seriously, what's not to like? Jamie Day brings this inviting thriller from one of my all time favorite publishers-St. Martin's Press.

There's blackmail, stalking, murder, mystery, intrigue, drugs, infidelity, parental issues, relationship problems,.. my word!

As a divorced, single mom of three (2 in college/1 in high school) with all the drama/isssues loaded I couldn't help but relate on many levels and I hope you can too.

The urgency, the thickening plots, the sense of structure, the colorful and vivid characters, the setting...It's all just perfect.

If you're like me you enjoy fast paced energy. Things moving and groving in all directions yet relatable, exciteable, and dare I say dangerous.

Revenge is on the minds of some as we learn that adoption might be in play. Each characters relationships are tested. Nerves fraid. Emotions on high. Alerts should seriously be given before entering certain situations.

Wait,...Did you hear fireworks?!...

As seasons change with the weather the moods swiftly change. Life is constantly evolving.

That ending....Oh, girl. You had me perplexed what direction we were headed.

I didn't know whether to duck from a sucker punch, hide from a bullet, run for the hills, grab the binoculars, watch from afar, or simply dive in & enjoy the water.

Wow! I seriously think I might just need a social detox or whatever's on the menu at this point. LOL!

Speaking of which what are we being served up next? I can't wait to see because I'll prepare myself now. Maybe grab a few pills to go with a nice drink or something...Oh, wait...I don't drink nor take pills.
Ok, well then I'll sit and wait because I'm not wealthy and money doesn't grow on trees but if you play your cards right....it may just fall into place. Just ask Willow.

I always wondered if people would be worried about D.N.A. results if they're really seeking truths but perhaps I'll direct that question to Riley as she seems to be all set.

Mandy is my hero! Hot damn! I don't blame her , no really I don't because in life you sometimes have to take matters into your own hands.

That mess with the two deaths is so engaging, twisty, and darn right fun that I'm sure it'll be praised for years to come.

This book darn near gave me a seizure, but luckily I've only had one stroke. Poor Evan though, I just wish he was in better health.
Welp, I got to go. It's been a blast. Sparkle on -Queen!

Thank you for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "The #MeToo Effect" By Leigh Gilmore

The #MeToo Effect highlights the many barriers women like myself face from being survivors of abuse. Whether, that abuse is sexual, religious, financial, verbal, physical, or otherwise.

The fact that in 2023 we must still fight for equality, for our voices to be heard, for our statements/alleged allegations to be seen as credible is unfathomable.

I lived the horror of all forms of abuse via my former spouse of an 11 yr. marriage. I had three kids from the union. It ended 4 yrs later with 3 attorneys for the case with one assisting in bankruptcy do to the divorce settlements or lack thereof on my behalf.

What you see portrayed in this wonderfully written work is much the same experienced here. Grandiose ego's, positions of authority and power, the elite who threaten to destroy, the corruption and lack of competent judges, the disgusting/barberic mistreatment of those whom were abused. Not once but repeatedly by the system designed to protect.

Our thin blue line is meant to protect-serve, but at what extent is this accomplished, and for whom do they serve, might be best asked instead of merely, "What do we owe survivors?"

The victim blaming, shaming, guilt, gaslighting, manipulation, smear-campaigns, hoovering, and more are common place.

In my civil case - An I.C.C. (1st time violation) resulted in arrest of P.F.A. violation. He was sent for anger management and 3 months probation with drug/alcohol treatment being administered.

He told me afterwards years later, "I should've been teaching those courses not taking them."
It's appalling to note this man then became Deacon of our local churches after we separated/subsequently divorced in 2013. In fact, he has since wreaked havoc in his place of worship.

The fact that we have to rely upon celebrities to try to gain access to accountabilty is a slap in the face to ordinary citizens w/o the funding to protect themselves nor to even hold others accountable.
In fighting what do we gain? Might be a better question since we can't afford to fight City Hall or the Supreme Court as the cases may be in this novel.

Producing evidence to the crimes committed are often gone to the wasteside -ignored, forgotten, destroyed, hidden, or left to linger for the statues to expire w/o criminal charges being applied.

As a former public defender intern my job was to get people to understand multiple faucets of the legal system and apply it for defending our clients. I wasn't there to make nice or play the role of a supporter nor even to believe that those being charged were guilty or innocent. It was merely to 'Defend' and perhaps we need to examine it more closely.

The fact that he said/she said remains and that innocent before proving guilty is part of case law carries a grey area. Those we defend are in many cases guilty but as professionals we must remain neutral and serve out justice for those we defend.

As a survivor of a malignant narcissist I would add that these individuals know the courts from years of experience defending themselves in them. The tactics such as delay, appeal, pay-off, or threaten into submission are tactics that hold great pressure against survivors in coming forward.
Our lives are subsequently ruined while as Leigh Gilmore writes they're also enhanced for the defender who is awarded with specialized monetary gifts and entitlements for 'winning.'

Winning at all costs is something that's taken the back burner in these specific abuse cases. At what costs -much to ourselves-do we stay in this fight?

As in my case my excellent credit destroyed. My life torn to pieces even to today having been left bankrupt, homeless, LT unemployed from 20 yrs. childrearing/assisting spouse to further his own career.
Remember the old adage -Stand by your man? We're raised to not have power. To be silent. To take the blows and not speak out against our abusers.

In fact, upon discussing my own abuse his own aunt told me that I shouldn't come forward, remain silent, and stay married for the sake of the kids.

I chose to go to court and fight for the next generation not my own. Today I type this in extreme poverty, 12 yr of job searching, zero credit, and not able to re-enter after a 20 yr gap in employment.

Today I tell you that I told my story to every member of Congress and it fell upon deaf ears.

I was one of many who participated in the #MeToo movement. I believe in the voice of many but I don't always agree with walking around with a vagina plastered on my hat or on a sign to prove my point.
I believe the reason why many women aren't believed is because there's been a long time movement to see all women as crazy, delusional, or insane. The notion that we raise our voices and demand accountabilty shows a side of 'anger' that many aren't accustomed to seeing from women.

While, men showcase the same when being accused and in defending themselves for a woman to do the same will be labeled as too hard core, too femist, too much of a 'Karen' for their liking.

I'm a feminist -raised with three brothers/only daughter of 4 kids-I'll tell you this I'll never stop telling my story for the reasons you presented.

It's healing. It's helpful. It does open the doors for others to come forth in love and support.

So, in answer to your question, what do we want:
For me-personally-it's to be heard. To be seen. To be valued. To be treated as an equal.
To not be told I'm not believable nor credible. To have my evidence and my statements/accusations validated. To not be told to sit next to my abuser in court. To not be told, "I'm just a mom" or that I somehow cannot be trusted in telling the truth.

It's degrading for women to have male judges entertaining the tactics I mentioned earlier in assisting men to gain the upper hand. We need to revamp our courts (family courts especially) in being knowledgeable of this abuse and being able to understand DV and Sexual Abuse victims in a new light.
We aren't lying for any monetary gain. We would never put ourselves out there as there's nothing to gain but additional blame/shame.

I woke up to sexual abuse literally/figuratively and being married should not grant one that entitlement over another spouse.

I'm told nobody would ever believe me but my response is this: I have an entire internet system that values my truths. #TheLostSelfLifeAfterNarcissism is my world on Facebook.

God bless all survivors and thank you Leigh Gilmore for spreading light in the darkness of abuse everywhere.
