Book Review: "A Good Neighborhood" By Therese Anne Fowler

The American Dream altered by two different families with two different perspectives on racial equality, crimes of passion, and single parenting.

For me the Good Neighborhood was about making a mark from a white author by including a bi-racial son and while I read the opening points from the author I felt it was disjointed and forced.

The action was way too slow to reveal the importance of the characters and the accusations they were facing in terms of murder, rape, etc...

The idea of the racial tensions for me was not free flowing but felt like I was reminded of it throughout the book and as a reader I don't want to be focused on the color of the skin but rather the writing style and format being offered.

The entire idea behind the book just wasn't for me but that doesn't mean it won't be a good fit for those empty nesters out there.

I can note that Brad Whitman seems to be a real charmer and quite wealthy but will that wealth help or hurt him....

Teen romance is never an easy topic but when you can't see eye to eye it becomes a bit more complicated.

I hope you enjoy this read as I'm sure as the author noted she did her research but for me it just fell short.

Book Review: "Child's Play" By Danielle Steel

Single, successful, vibrant mom Kate has raised three grown kids so well that her husband would be proud.

Life is full circle and in this case it's not just 'Child's Play' as it doesn't get easier with age only more dramatic and cumbersome.

Enter Kate's world from her marriage to Tom that resulted in Anthony, Tamara, and Claire.

Now folks these three are no saints but they are not all sinners either!

Anthony of course is sowing his wild oats and unsure of his romance partners. Notice I used the plural form here. He's caught between Amanda and Alicia with plenty of love to go around.

Meanwhile Sis Tamara is figuring out her sexual orientation with Stacey and is about to embark on newly wedded bliss.

With time ticking Claire feels that being an unwed mother won't be all that bad as she has Reed to fall back upon...or does she?

None of the kids are married so there's that but the real deal is in how this family concurs the curves thrown at them with precision and ease.

I loved the ending with Kate and family and I wouldn't change a thing!

Book Review: "The Runaway" By Hollie Overton

The Runaway for me missed the mark!

What begins as a wild and freaky intro that captivated me it ended with a good feel in adopting Ash her foster child but left me wanting more.

The entire book was a race against time and circumstances.
Ash is 16yo and quite impressionable as she hooks up with a homeless young man who belongs to a cult. This cult known as the Tribe run by 'Mo' is intriguing yet dangerous.
Both Becca (LAPD forensic psychologist) and her foster daughter Ash would've been better spending some good qualities days getting to know one another as both held secrets.

A number of hard core topics were discussed : homelessness, adoption, mental illness, drugs, the foster care and court system, and the lack of police training and initiatives.

All this proves to be a huge task and left me with more wonder than closure...

However I do hope you enjoy it as it was a great new read from the wonderfully talented Hollie Overton!

Book Review: "Home for Erring and Outcast Girls" By Julie Kibler

"They fell down and there was none to help." PSALM 107:12

What the home represented for these girls was hope, peace, tranquility, and reformation.
Many of these unwed young ladies were able to conquer their fears and learn new skills to make them employable in the 1900's.

Lizzie and Maddie are our two main characters with much different views but similar outcomes.

Lizzie with her new baby girl in tow is destitute and alone while Maddie is full spitfire action.
In the current era of 2017 Cate the librarian and Laurel find documents that provide a history of the Berachah home and bonds these two ladies together.

The main characters made you feel and embrace every struggle, every hardship, every emotion to the full degree.

What ultimately occurred to Cate with Seth was not only unexpected but disasterous and showed just how hostile the environment had become. While Maddie eventually married it was not what one may have expected either as the first was quite rushed and eventually was annulled deemed illegal allowing her the freedom to pursue the man of her dreams.

All in all I enjoyed this new read and thank Goodreads for this giveaway.

Book Review: "365 Days of Wonder" By RJ Palacio

Short and sweet with illustrative precepts from Mr. Brown (English Teacher) that will have you glowing right up till the end by RJ Palacio.

Teachers are meant to teach but the style and format used makes all the difference.
Here we have someone who wants to "choose kind."

Everyone of us has a story to tell and telling your story can be healing to so many who are suffering especially with regards to abuse, bullying, and hardships.

While I'm not sure which publisher or author sent me this book I thank them because it was a quick and easy read that packed a nice eye awakening feel to it.

Book Review "The War for Kindness" By Jamil Zaki

Change your belief and you will change the path and projection of Empathy!

We live in a world in which it's no longer important to show compassion, love, mutual understanding, and respect.
Rather hate, indifference, toxicity, and grandiose ego's have taken the world hostage in this new norm of communication and understanding humanity at large.

Why?

While studies have shown that psychopaths lack empathy it's not impossible to change and alter their brain functions to be more open and receptive to the idea.

So then why are we still here talking about it?

To feel how a victim feels, to put yourself in their shoes, to live a life of suffering is this not how empathy is overcome?

Trade hate for acceptance, approval for humanity sake, dehumanization for welcoming discussions!

Empathy is a personality trait but it's also a choice.

In order to increase empathy one must increase contact, communication, compassion, and acceptance.

"Human need is infinite."

Media fostered compassion fatigue has resulted in a 40% increased in viewers exhaustion to bad news coverage.

Overcaring is also a possibility with nurses, doctors, therapists, and psychologist in the well respected profession.

A warrior mentality also is working against the police who see hatred first hand in an us v them rather than a community policing reactive approach to protection.

Fear and anxiety have lead to domination and violence.

This kill or be killed mentality must end!

All in all this is one fab read!

Book Review: "The Weather Machine" By Andrew Blum

Are you aware that we use sensors& computer simulations to gather meteorological data in effectively processing the information that is distributed worldwide?

If you did than the rest of this book probably won't help you all that much as it's mostly fluff and not very extensive or for that matter interesting.

It does touch upon the Euro Model or ECMWF (European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) but the intro level first or second step is not what many readers might have hoped to receive.

A good portion of the book is about the corporate giants trying to take over the weather apps such as Accu Weather in controlling weather forecasting while simultaneously lobbying attacks on the National Weather Service which by the way did you know you can sign up to become a weather spotter volunteer? If not you welcome:https://www.weather.gov/pdt/spotterTraining

We do delve into the history of predicting the weather from the Day Day to the Cold War and beyond in an attempt to remind readers just how fare we've come or in some cases in hopes of getting the monkey off their backs with all the weather jokes.

Either way it wasn't quite as informative as I'd hoped with all these advancements to discuss and for that reason I gave it the three star rating.

Book Review: "The Secret Therapy of Trees" By Marco Mencagli

Have you hugged your Oak today?

Might sound like a crazy idea until you've read this book and learned about bio-energy, ions, air pollutants, and so much more!

We are less connected to nature today and it shows with increased anxiety and stress however did you know houseplants can reduce CO2 and clear the air by releasing more oxygen in the process?

With new green ideas coming about it's important to continue to pursue the green building initiatives for increased cognitive performance by up to ten percent.

A great inventive and explorative read that will have you rushing out to your nearest greenhouse for aloe vera and orchids.

Book Review: American Predator By Maureen Callahan

Israel Keyes reminds me of The BTK in which they lived relatively normal lives except for the fact they were both serial killers and nobody near them knew the truths.

These monsters in disguise were able to get away with it because of their elusiveness, intelligence to some degree, but also careful planning so much so it was the descriptive journalling that caught the BTK.

In the end the victims have another term for these toxic individuals and the fact that many wonder whether it's nature or nurture is insignificant compared to the number of lives suddenly snuffed out.

Whether using his Kill Kits is irrelevant because he was someone who moved with rapid precision after each killing that it was hard to simply keep track of his whereabouts and activities.

He eventually succumbed to his own madness at his own hands but not before leading police on a wild goose chase for his victims as well as the evidence to convict him.

This was one fascinating work that exposes the problem with traditional police forces.

Rather than be proactive they are reactive and often are in a 'kill or be killed warrior mentality' which is also a problem not fully addressed in the criminal justice world of needing new legislature to combat reformation.

I highly recommend this great new work American Predator by Maureen Callahan.

Book Review: "The Sunday Potluck Club" By Melissa Storm

What a way to meet a new friend....at a cancer ward at a Anchorage Hospital .

However you meet friends in unexpected places and Bridget and Amy are embarking on this new journey of healing and discovery after hardships together.

Why not...

They are members after all of this club for those who've lost loved ones and perhaps it could lead to something truly lovely...or loving!

You know they say you find love when you least expect it too so maybe this Valentines' Day Adoption in which the idea of a Date a Rescue Dog isn't all going to the dogs...

A nice light and fun read for the Summer 2019!

Book Review: "A Mrs. Miracle Christmas" By Debbie Macomber

Angels Among Us!

What better way to start the Summer Heatwave as it's like a treat when you have Christmas in July with Debbie Macomber!

This starts out with a married couple wanting to have a baby desperately but sadly are unable too.

It results in a miracle of sorts as the grandmother Helen is struggling with dementia but notices the change in the situation above.

That change resulted in her believing they were touched by an Angel that appeared out of nowhere at their door to help this family in need.

The entire atmosphere takes on a more jovial feeling as Helen becomes more actively involved setting up the nativity, decorating the xmas tree, and showing signs of happiness.

All the while Lauren and Zach are also seeing signs from above that something more is about to take place and could change their lives forever in a good way!

I loved every second of this new work by Debbie Macomber and hope you do too!

Book Review: "Labyrinth" By Catherine Coulter

What's not to love when you have so much going on in this new riveting yet heartbreaking action packed thriller?!

It all begins with Agent Sherlock whose involved in a car accident that causes her to lose her memory after hitting CIA analyst Justice Cummings.

Meanwhile her husband and boss is processing his emotions that are wildly out of control and wonders if perhaps leaving to work would be the best solution.

As all this plays out Special Agent Griffin Hammersmith rescues a kidnapped woman who claims she just escaped a madman.

Upon hearing a female scream Griffin is then lead to the home of a female reporter which leading to a bit of psychic talent in saving her life.

The team works together flawlessly while Dillon and Sherlock become increasingly more in tune and in love.
For me the real shocker was wrapped up in the three teen girls and what's behind the motive or in other words the modus operandi of the situation at hand.

It was a shocker to learn the truth and reveal the real reasoning and mindset behind it all which included drugs, gifted children, and even a suicide that resulted from the madness.

A must read thriller is upon us!

Book Review: "The Confession Club" By Elizabeth Berg

In telling your story you never know who you may be helping ....

The takeaway here is we all have a story to tell no matter your age, your economic background, or your age.

What matters is your heart and soul. Your ability to connect to others. Your ability to stay true and authentic while not losing sight of what matters most.

For me I like the story and the characters and the varying stories each one told as the supper club becomes the Confession Club in which secrets are revealed.

A cute and charming new novel brought to us by the amazing Elizabeth Berg.

Book Review: "The Geography of Risk" By Gilbert M Gaul

The real question here is why continue the insane path of federal subsidies, tax breaks, low interest loans, grants, and government flood insurance shifting the problem from private investors to public taxpayers while ignoring the most inherent risks to life and property in order for the wealthy to rebuild on or near barrier islands and coastal flood plains with the assurances that these 3 million dollars in property investments will always be covered by their government.

The insanity is mind blowing that our government is pushing the wealthy to build million dollar homes right on the waters edge with the guarantee the government will bail or buy them out in the case of a natural disaster.

Not only is this a problem it's depleting the resources for those who truly need the funds and have not built in flood prone areas but for which climate change and global warming along with the altering humanity consequences results in a different more disturbing set of results.

Attention is given to areas that are below sea level, those losing sand from beach erosion so quickly they must truck it in from other countries especially in Florida, the epic storms that are literally ripping sea towns off the map in Long Island NJ and surrounding locations.
We cannot continue to rebuild in these locations unless we use smart intelligent new ideas to solve the problem rather than band aids to throw money out the window.

This brings to mind a recent idea in using stormwater management as offered by Henk Ovink from the Netherlands and his story with CBS can be found here: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/storm-wa...

One thing is for sure mother nature is mad as hell and we must address the issue head on or face disasterous consequences for our future and that of our children's futures

Book Review: "Our New Normal" By Colleen Faulkner

Staying true to self even after hardships threaten to crack you to the very core!

This is the dilemma for any teen parent especially when you have multiple teens with one off in college and another soon to be right behind her son as Hazel is now 16yo.

I'm so glad I read this for multiple reasons including the strain on the marriage and having to come together on all fronts when things don't work out as one may have hoped.
It turns out Hazel became pregnant and vows to not only have the baby but stay with Tyler the baby's father.

Tyler as it turns out isn't the most attentive young man and there's troubled waters that must be discussed including how if Hazel keeps the baby we know the parents will be doing overtime to tend and provide for their grandchild.

How can someone so young be capable of making such a huge life altering decision?
Liv the mother knows how hard it is to raise a child having been adopted herself and has plenty of concerns that need to be ironed out while Oscar her husband chooses a much different path.

Can they all come together for the sake of the unborn or will this be a split that will forever go unhealed?

I love how this book addresses the issue of not only adoption but parenting and teen pregnancy in a way that's empathetic yet solidly constructed well defined truthful and heartfelt authentically written advice.

Colleen Faulkner has touched on a subject that is every parents top concern for teens in today's high tech ultra fast growing up world.

Book Review: "The Vagina Bible" By Jennifer Gunter

If you don't have the courage to ask you may never know the answer (thanks Dad) and this is what is constantly stressed upon which came back to mind as I read through this unique, diverse, and well illustrated new work by Jennifer Gunter.

Jennifer is here to prevent the myths and tell the truths while examining how and why we have entered this world of out of sight out of mind feeling.

Nothing is ever too important to ignore and women today are so busy in their careers that it's often at the expense of our health.

Women are by nature empaths who are constantly taking care of others and this book notes that we must put ourselves first and prioritize our needs for a change.

If you ever had a question concerning women's health I'm sure you'll find the answer in this descriptive, well thought out, and well planned novel.

A must read for anyone interested in separating myth from medicine especially for those of the transgender community which Jenn fully welcomes here.

Book Review: "Smart, Successful, and Abused" By Angela Mailis

I've always noted as a survivor of domestic violence and malignant narcissism that you truly must live in this world of fight or flight to truly understand the power dynamics, control, and struggles that encompass the entrapment.

It's a mind over matter situation in which many women surely are smart, attractive, and have everything they could ever need yet still stay in hopes of change, out of fear of retaliation, out of purely low self esteem and or confidence.

So much is at stake yet finances, medical conditions, housing and or transportation issues all of these and more prevent such departure.

Many women I've spoken with over the years in discussing the matter reveal that they have no where else to go.

They may have become isolated and or embarrassed by their abusive situation and may have lost their sole forms of support from family, friends, even co workers.

It's not something you can discuss openly over a cup of tea and it's not something that is often believed or seen as credible as these toxic individuals carry themselves in a light that would never be compared to abusive tendencies.

In addition the legal system and legislature regarding domestic violence has yet to catch up to the times.

More women are abused and or killed from abuse then war time horrors.

That is fact yet we still believe a piece of paper such as protection from abuse order or a simple slap on the wrist for an ICC violation might prevent the next sudden and unexplained attack?

Having been left bankrupt, lt unemployed after giving up career to raise 3 kids solo, having been left in extreme poverty, and having been homeless w/o income assets or savings or for that matter credit I can assure you it's all worth the pain of leaving.

Being independent and or single again and having to face the life of dating is not quite what anyone wants after many years of marriage or in my case 11 yrs marriage and 13 yrs together yet we don't always need to have someone to be successful and this is one issue I have with this book.

While entering or exiting the single world is a part of it all it's not the end all.

As for the remainder of the book it describes in detail the notion that abuse is not just physical scars but every form of abuse and readers must be reminded of this notion.

So often they think that belittling someone, or bullying, or even talking down and being rude or obnoxious is not abuse and all of this including the latter emotional/verbal abuse is still abuse.

This is a great new read for anyone wondering the why's and how's as it's much more complex especially for those with children who have proof of abuse yet the courts idea of having a two parent household outweighs the abusive nature.

Kill or be killed is simply not important to the family courts and it's costing women their lives and that of their children!

You cannot force love!

Book Review: "When She Returned" By Lucinda Berry

When Kate vanished she left behind a husband and a daughter ultimately leaving them no choice but to all but declare her dead and move on.

Now 11 yrs later she returns with an infant at a gas station leaving investigators to ponder was she involved in some type of cult?

Why would a mother and wife leave her previous life behind and was it done on purpose or was she the victim of foul play?

So many questions that must be a
nswered as we travel between the present and the past dual narratives.

Everything has changed since she first left including her appearance and many now wonder would or could she have become a disciple for Love International?

Only time will tell but you certainly don't want to miss this one....as it's packed with excitement on all fronts!

Book Review: "Wildflower Hope" By Grace Greene

Wildflower Hope is on course to be the best book of the summer.

Book Review: "Blowout" By Rachel Maddow

As with anything these days this novel is all about corporate and individual greed. The greed that warrants full power and full wealth under the disguise of saving others or helping the environment move towards the future goals.

From Oklahoma to NW Pennsylvania and beyond Rachel tackles the truth in a powerful and dynamic fashion that will leave no stone literally and figuratively not turned.

"Play on emotions; the bigger the lie, the better; lies should be reported many times."
These lies are what began the process especially with regard to hydraulic fracking in which it turned out many wondered if this fracking resulted in earthquakes such as in Oklahoma.
Two main players you'll find discussed often throughout this game play is Rex Tillerson of Exxon Mobile and Austin Holland of Oklahoma Geological Survey.

Accordingly hydraulic fracturing -breaking oil and gas out of shale rock- could cause earthquake in 1 out of every 10 fracked wells.

"For every 1 thousand wells in state and federal waters, there's an average of 20 uncontrolled releases or 'blowouts' every year."

Energy sources and renewable energy is what this discussion should be upon not becoming richer but sadly that's where the conversation has gone.

Heaven forbid the government also become involved and offer breaks or incentives for such advancements.

The oil and gas industry needs regulation, oversight, and transparency not self regulation.
We need to follow American interests and go through the proper channels designed to prevent such atrocities through the Committee on Foreign Investment.

Coal is dead. Oil and Gas is dead. Sadly the latter just doesn't look sick yet.

We cannot afford to continue the course by causing destruction to : Geological balance, governance, environmental injury and climate apocalypse.

Containment obviously is needed!

A fascinating read especially for me as I come from the Northeastern section of Pa near where the fracking debate continues with many friends having passed away because of it.
I hope we learn there is no immediate payment that could be fulfilled when we are literally killing humanity and our environment.

While the rich have may gotten richer it's at what costs that I need to remind you!
Please read, educate, and stop the hate....

Book Review: "One Good Deed" By David Baldacci

Three years behind bars for a crime he claims he never committed.

That's the story Archer is sticking with till the very end but there's so much more than meets the eye here in Poca with plenty of characters to fill in and tie up the loose ends.

Ernestine is his parole officer and once he's released he winds up meeting Hank and his sidekick Jackie Tuttle.

As desperation slowly creeps upon him Archer decides to take up Hank on his offer to collect a debt owed by Jackie's estranged father.

Simple right? Wrong! Facing down the barrel of a rifle is what greeted him upon meeting Tuttle.

Oh and Archer has eyes upon him by nearly everyone in town especially when other murders are still occurring in the same vicinity.

Ah hell, the dialogue, the plot, the action will have you on edge with a finale that was the icing on the cake as they say.

So why not give this one a try...I think you'll love it too!

Book Review: "The Other Mrs Miller" By Allison Dickson

Shifting plots and storyline made this one quite the alluring if not ridiculous world of the two Millers seem even odder.

It takes the first half to lay the scene and set the upcoming twists but once it's set the dead body suddenly appears while the detectives in figuring it all out come out in full force.

You'll be sitting taking notes of the affairs, the mistreatments both by Phoebe's husband and her ill will towards him, the neighbor Vicki and handsome son Jake and hubby Ron and oh so much more.

It's always the case that things are never as they seem and this is true in this novel.

Book Review: "The Wilder Girls" By Rory Power

There was so much to like for this book yet there was also some touch points that I'll address.

First I love the premise and idea of the Raxter School of Girls to be located in Maine 2 yrs after the 'Tox' has been uncovered.

The CDC has been on this case seeking a cure alongside the US Navy.
The notion that symptoms and flare ups change with the seasons sounds quite alluring and mysterious.

As for the downers there was plenty of fluff but not enough action. It seemed like midway we as readers were waiting for the action to begin.

Teenage antics seemed to take over the book with back and forth bickering and break ups rather than a relationship built upon substance.

What you must note when reading is not to try to play the detective to uncover the answers behind it all but rather to enjoy the fact that it's about portraying females in a powerful light.

All in all it was a good summer read for 2019!

Book Review: "Sophia, Princess Among Beasts" by James Patterson

Classified as fantasy, adult, YA, and fiction this one has it all but only if readers are open to the idea as it's not the normal thriller you may have come to enjoy.

While it does have thrilling moments it's more about the meaning behind the scenes or so it was with me as I read this new work by James Patterson.

It's not everyday you read fantasy from this author yet I was transported to a magical land in which surely things don't go as planned.

While Sophia is battling for independence as the two main villains Ares and Reiper are set to end this magical experience for all.

For those who are sensitive to darkness and horror there is animal cruelty, attempted rape, and murder in this novel.
In addition there is the connection between the living and the dead with monsters, evil villains, and the like as she battles a plague, attention from Raphael, and the ill equipped Ares to become Queen.

Ahhh fantasy life is short lived as she succumbs to it all as Ares marches closer to the castle.

Afterwards she's transported to the other world where spirits go while the plot continues to thicken while reuniting with her dead mother.

Forced marriage to one of Ares's friends is not in her cards as her heart belongs to Raphael so she fights teaching others about rebellion.

Reiper wants non of it and kills the King only to have the castle overcome by peasant mobs who decided to rebell.
While this may bounce around it's for me the classic Patterson marker of why he is a storyteller not just a writer.

Follow along...follow along...
Not everything is made to make sense folks that's why it's labeled FANTASY!

Sit back and enjoy and don't think too much into it all.

Book Review: "The Nickel Boys" By Colson Whitehead

“It didn't make no sense until it made the only sense.”

The more you understand your civil rights and your freedoms it appears the less you possess in this new work by Colson Whitehead.

These two young men of color were sent to a segregated reform school in Tallahassee Florida.

However they may call these young men students but in essence they were slaves that were forced to do as they were told in horrible conditions.

Just as Elwood is about to enroll to college he makes one wrong move that cost him his freedom being sentenced to juvenile reformatory at Nickel Academy.

While the mission statement sounds honorable this is a grotesque horrible sadistic and abusive location in which the boys if not reformed as sent 'out back' from the corrupt officials in charge.

This reminds me of something similar here in NEPA known as the Kids for Cash Scandal in which these young children were sent to juvenile detention facilities and never came out the same being permanently altered by their experiences.

Book Review: "Almost Midnight" By Mike Bowditch

Bizarre!

One word is all that's needed as this one takes on two separate worlds and attempts to make a connection.

Here we have Mike (Maine's game warden) who is on the case of a killer (archer) of the last wild wolf and goes all out in an even bigger criminal conspiracy.

Meanwhile he learns best friend Billy has been released from prison after coming to the aid and defending a female guard.

The plot thickens as the assault may be a larger plot to kill and this conspiracy now has him watching his back and that of his family.

As he races to the cabin to the 'safe zone' he encounters trouble like never before as he becomes outmanned and outgunned.

He's almost out of options...
