Book Review: "On My Watch" By Virginia Buckingham

A remarkable personal memoir of a woman torn between shame and duty owed via her career and countless deaths attributed to that final decision made that day when 911 occurred and horrified a nation into mourning.

It was a day that will go down in history as terrorists attacked 'on her watch' leaving her feeling guilty, shamed, and blamed by those who had no business passing judgement upon her.

We live in a world in which everyone has an opinion, everyone is an expert, and journalist no longer use fact checks or transparency but rather try to get the first story leading to errors and opinion based rather than factual news.
It's a one sided story that the public is used to receiving and this has multiple layers of pain that often go ignored.

The victim becomes victimized and rather than listen they display anger, hatred, and considerable amounts of pain.

While I didn't really connect with this one as I'd hoped it did lead me to a place of questionable actions in the spur and heat of the moment.

Virginia Buckingham was the head of Boston's Logan Airport on September 11, 2001. "On my watch, American Flight 11 and United Flight 175 were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. The first news story suggesting she might be fired in response to the hijackings appeared on September 13. A media frenzy followed. Six weeks after 9/11, Massachusetts’ then-governor forced her to resign. She was later sued personally for wrongful death by a 9/11 family, one of only two individuals named in the decade-long post-9/11 litigation. For many years, she feared that the blame was deserved."

It was truly a mixed bag because she's not the only one who may have missed the warning signs or connected the dots. CIA, FAA, FBI, and others offered very little in a pattern that may have raised eyebrows and it's not easy to catch someone in the act of a crime when the crime hasn't yet been committed -which reminds me of domestic violence issues - in which men and women must wait to be attacked before being able to legally take action.

This is how our law works and sometimes we get lucky and head it off at the pass but often we lose sight of the dangers lurking daily.

Thank you to Virginia, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "The Last Wife" By Karen Hamilton

"Be Careful What You Wish For!!"

Nina and Marie were best of friends until she passed from a terminal illness.
Nina requested Marie to carry out her final wishes with regards to her family.
However, Marie had her own agenda -one of mistrust, hidden secrets, and this little thing called "jealousy" in wanting what Nina had possessed.

What ultimately happened was the power of the lies escalated and turned deadly resulting in more than just hidden secrets but damning evidence against several individuals.

The concerns centering upon Nina and her other relationships was quite interesting to say the least and while Marie made a promise she ultimately created her own 'oasis' if you will and jumped right in.

The Last Wife by Karen Hamilton was an epic, powerful, heart pounding thriller that had me on the edge of my seat.

What you probably think might happen with one individual is multiplied ten times over and it's truly a domino effect.

I'm so thrilled to present this review for consideration as it's part of the Harlequin Summer 2020 Blog Tour series which I'm proud to present to all book lovers everywhere.

Thank you Harlequin, Karen Hamilton, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review and for allowing me to be a part of this amazing Blog Tour.

Book Review: "The Last Train to Key West" By Chanel Cleeton

A powerful and moving piece from Chanel Cleeton who is quickly becoming a new favorite author after reading a few of her works.

This is set in the early- late 30's in which we have three lively women that are truly ferocious and yet doomed by their circumstances yet manage to take one day at a time in overcoming their adversities and propelling them forward.

Regardless of where you stand in politics this novel touched briefly upon the Bonus Army and their march of 1932.

If you're wondering like I was if the Bonus Army ever got paid who fought in WWI the money owed to them for each day they served overseas in the amount of $1.75 per day and $1.00 for each day they served in the United States the answer was yes but not till 1945 with certificates redeemable for 1k each via Congress.

The Bonus Marchers (20k veterans) who were unemployed and desperate went to DC to protest and demand the passage of the bill that was introduced by Rep. Wright Patman for immediate disbursement.

This book had me feeling all sorts of emotions from feeling trapped in an abusive marriage as we had seen with Helen and Tom to the aftermath of being hooked up with a pre-arranged marriage with Mirta and Anthony Corduro to the trials and tribulations held by Elizabeth and Sam.

This was a time of great uncertainty with the depression and here we add to that mix a major hurricane that devastated the land and those involved in its path.

These three stories couldn't be more different and I was curious to see how Chanel would reel this baby in and bring them all together.

The end result was one of uncertainty yet perseverance in going after what you want, what you need, and what you deserve to have.

Of course, the question of how does one get closure was a constant reminder...
In Helen's case she dreamt of Tom's passing as she couldn't bare the abuse yet ironically his fate was tied in the end to another individual -which was a real shocker- especially learning of his status as missing or presumed dead after the weather related event.

Mirta's situation was dark and dreary and I truly felt she'd never find the comfort and solice she deserved yet she faired pretty well.
What of the 'fear of the unknown?'

Well, you can imagine some of the characters were suffering from their own personal reflections and the author truly did a magnificent job at showing the Karma train arriving and departing often for a one way trip.

Elizabeth and Sam was another quite intriguing piece of this three part character development because she was injured in the storm surge but that didn't stop her from dreaming big.

Sometimes it's ironic how things play out if you give them time.

In this case the story resolves itself in a way that I'd never thought possible.
"There's so much broken around us maybe all we can do is try to fix each other."
Truth be told there's plenty of pain today but we have to hold on to hope, to faith, to fate, and to each other. Humanity is not the enemy.

There's plenty of twist and turns here so be prepared to be blown away but it's so darn enjoyable especially the ending that was just superb.

Book Review: "Broken People" By Sam Lansky

“He fixes everything that’s wrong with you in three days.”

Well when you're down and out on your luck you'll do just about anything.
Take this idea of fixing your problems with a shaman because why not -You're Rich! - oh and gay and you're almost on the verge of losing your magazine writing job and being left with nothing and no one.

Also for those who are picky the Broken People novel by Sam Lansky touches upon some very heavy topics including sexuality, shame, HIV, acceptance, and depression.

The ultimate concern centers around Charles and Sam and whether or not one of them is responsible for giving the other a possibly deadly virus.

“And this is how life goes: there will be times where you feel like nothing more than a patchwork quilt of all the worst parts of yourself, and then there will be times when the call to be better is just so lovely and clear, like a bell ringing at a frequency all the voices that keep you up at night can’t hear.”
― Sam Lansky, Broken People

All in all this was a good read that really was emotionally jarring and heartfelt for readers to explore. It allows a thoughtful discussion that resonates long after you close the book.

Book Review: "Beach Read" By Emily Henry

That moment when you lose your inspiration as a romance writer after using your broken family as the backdrop...

Welcome January! No, not the month, the female character whose simply looking for love.
Enter, Gus another writer (go figure) who decides to switch genres with January for his own writer's block issues.

Luckily these two have a flavored past from high school and now live as neighbors.
Now, place some quick banter, cute romance, some nifty characters and we have a whole lotta' mess!

Oh, dear me--Did I forget to mention the side order of Jacques -the ex- who broke it off with her in a hot tub of all the darn places?!

Ok, well in the end it seems to all work out nicely-so all's well that ends well.

Book Review: "The Persuasion" By Iris Johansen

"When Eve Duncan's daughter, Jane MacGuire, becomes a killer's target, Jane must team up with longtime love interest Seth Caleb in this thrilling novel from the
#1 bestselling author of Smokescreen."

Well folks time to break out the crucifix in the cave and get going as cults are plentiful and danger is lurking with Luca the main bad influencer and hard core criminal.

Eve's daughter Jane is on the look out for this madman whose made her his ultimate target -target for training- in his eyes.

Ironically,  her ex is a navy seal named Seth Caleb and he's determined to save her.

The action heats up and the romance department sizzles as we go from the freezer to the frying pan in a matter of seconds.

Look-there's "consequences for taking what you want."

Not everyone can simply wait around for the threat to become a reality because fine art is a masterpiece worth saving.

What makes everyone question is simple - Does Stefano have the blood lust?
After all he's simply looking for power -power over Jane- as her mentor if you will!

Could a mole be on sight?

Will Joe find this madman before he harms Jane?

Joe (former detective) has the skills necessary but will it be too late for salvation?

Niko is one of those characters that's quite full of color and vitality. However, he's not the most popular fella and Santo seems to take privy over him.
A Greek God is in the house of cards.

What could be this ultimate Nasty Plan in discussion?

Could this be more of a sexual crime than a petty crime?

In the end the camaraderie is apparent and the feelings seem mutual.

The bells toll...Iris always pleases the masses.

This read is work it's weight in gold.

Book Review: "The Second Hostage" By Jeffrey Deaver

One of the issues I've always had with short stories is the issue of nothing ever being resolved with cliff hangers for endings.

I enjoy reading Jeffery Deaver's work and have read several to date but in this case there's just too many untidy issues.
Colter Shaw is a reward seeker turned hostage negotiator for the Humble police department.

A mother of a teen runaway has offered 3k for her safe return of her 19yo named Emma.

A blow up over drugs seems to be the reason why her sudden departure.

Now there's another issue involving a scam...with nothing available for Shaw to do.

Ignore the golden rule to never get involved...

Well, there you have it. Take it or leave it.

I can't offer much else other than I bumped it up to three stars because I know Deaver's work is often wonderful and this may just be a bump in the road for me.

Book Review: "The Hilarious World Of Depression" By John Moe

I'll be honest with you-I don't know where John Moe has been hiding all these years- but I'm darn glad I found him &his brutal honesty, words of wisdom, intellectual scholarly appeal and insight. Don't take this the wrong way but depression needs a bit of humor mixed with sarcasm & John added it with plenty left in the tank in this brilliant Macmillan audio.

I've never listened to his podcasts but based on what I've just heard I may have to stalk this man because he tackles topics that are heavy yet need to be discussed.

Depression, Mental Illness, Suicide, Death of a Loved One, Survivor's Guilt, Loss of Self, and that all important journey we all must take from Ignorance to Awareness!

Sure, we can sweep it under the rug-pretend it doesn't exist- or we can be open, honest, frank, and do so with dignity, grace, and class and thankfully without language that'd make my mother frown.

We live in a world today where others dismiss without knowing the underlying issues and are quick to offer opinions that are a last ditch effort to douse the problem.

We offer increased funding to protect monuments yet take away funding in treating disabilities, mental illness, or in further evaluations using approaches like EMDR.

First- John- you are a man with a plan and a godly sent mission and I applaud you for your courage, motivation, and level of understanding.

Your pain is all of our pain because it ignites a passion within to release the stigma associated with such guilt, shame, remorse, death, and the trauma associated with shared experiences.

As you can probably tell I'm no stranger to pain. Enter the black sheep and scapegoat of the family.

I've been dealing with the lack of support and love from a narcissistic family for 47 years and let me tell ya; it ain't no picnic.

Your stage presence in offering guidance along with your level of maturity can only be obtained by authenticity and reality and sometimes we all need to go down Ol' Tobacco Road or aka Live the Life of Hard Knocks to learn lessons to grow stronger and more attune to others needs.

As you noted,"Your problems have maps and they will find you."
You can't ignore the past nor run and hide. It must be dealt with.
You know the truth is in your words when you mentioned,"Depression is my oldest companion."

I'm so terribly sorry for the loss of your brother Rick but his life was not in vain. You know by now that it wasn't your fault in getting that gun membership yet I'm sure that provides little comfort.
Thankfully you found EMDR therapy which helped you counter this illness and helped offer coping strategies well into the future.

When you noted about the trauma fixed upon memory that left saddies exhausted with vivid looping of the recurrent memory; it was relatable.
I say this because I lost my niece in 2016 (June 21st) just two days after Father's Day and the day before her father's birthday to a young man that was alleged to have been speeding on I-4 in Clermont Florida 4 years ago killing Cassie instantly along with 3 other adults (she being the only child) from this 7 car multi-vehicle accident.
https://www.dailycommercial.com/news/article_daf0f51c-8d96-5214-b4cc-bf04898a27ed.html
My brother is now raising an only child but it's a cruel and harsh reality to overcome as I myself am a single mom of three left bankrupt, homeless, LT unemployed , extreme poverty after a divorce in 2013 which left us devastated and torn apart as a family here in Pennsylvania.

I dare anyone to read my profile to understand just some of what occurred yet my voice and my writing instruments are my power. As are yours in this healing process.
I've done similarly to you in life in terms of offering a platform and allowing room for us all to understand this pain and hardships.

Sure pain is different from chronic mental illness but it's part of the umbrella of causes that I prefer because until someone walks in our shoes they have no idea.

I've learned early on when my mother was told I couldn't sit still that I was born this way not made from the environment. My mother was told to put me on medication for ADHD as a child (she never did thankfully) & I went on to achieve great success in both my personal and professional life.

Ironically doctors now tell me I talk fast--holy cow! The world may just end! Prepare for Armageddon I grew up in Northeastern PA near the boondocks of Bear Creek/Thornhurst area and if you wanted to be heard you had to talk loud and fast over three brothers as an only girl in the family . For god's sake my pop is hard of hearing from working in the Navy too. LOL

You touched on so many interesting and valuable topics that I don't know if I can do them all just because your level of sarcasm, humor, wit, and personality really blew me away and made me yearn for more.
Why did this audio have to end? WHY?

The podcasts with the celebrities and your own immensely personal tribute to your family and your brother in discussing your own personal issues with depression, suicide, chronic mental illness and beyond was so touching and heartfelt.

It brought to mind Robin Williams who suffered from Lewy Body Dementia (a rare brain disease) yet has fascinated the world with his intellect, charm, comedy, and abilities in grabbing an audience's attention and not letting them go.

Yet underneath that blanket was a man suffering from Parkinson's but also addiction and chronic depression.

His suicide was a block in time that I can never nor will ever forget. I grew up in the era of all things Robin Williams from his tv shows to his comedy club routines and talk show appearances and it well never be the same.

As you noted, there's no tidy ending. Our stories end when we die.

Of course, the celebrity female you noted stated, "Depression Lies."

This is an eye opener in the land of fake news these days. We get our information from a variety of emerging and instant gratification sources much of which offers strictly opinion based articles.

"Words Matter" was what you stressed as one of the 9 things you learned and I can't tell you how important our attitudes, words, and lack of empathy and compassion can truly hamper lives.

People do want to talk. They do need that platform. They do need others to listen intently to their voices and experiences.

We can learn so much from just listening, comprehending, and validating.
What a different world it would be if we all took just a second or 9 hours to listen to an audio of the same.

Your powerful story about your brother touched a nerve with me because you noted it felt as though that bullet ricocheted and hit everyone Rick knew and loved in the process.

Those words hold so much meaning behind them that it floored me.
You may well be a "professional saddie" but you're also human and I personally thank you for your level of insight and trust with sharing others stories to bring to your audience.

I don't need that 'big climactic event' because our lives all hold value.
Sure, your wife can divorce you, the kids may disown you, the dog may run away(did you say you had a dog??) Oh, well anyway we all can live in Walmart's parking lots but we can all do so together.

Unity, diversity, and love = Power in numbers.

Please don't ever tell someone suffering to SMILE-GET OVER IT- or worse as in my case,"SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP WE ALL GOT PROBLEMS- GET A JOB!
When I began to open up and tell my story those flood walls came crashing down. The walls built to protect soon built a platform to elevate those around me to join in this 'calling.'

Many would ask how much I charge for emails on my FB page, "The Lost Self Life After Narcissism" which dealt with recovery and rebuilding after malignant narcissism, domestic violence, and a host of DSM manual traits. I chuckled, and noted I do my work for free.

When I look in others eyes (especially as I volunteer in serving food for those in need), or in the past 20 years volunteering having been awarded the nation's highest award -The Points of Light-Ty 41st President of these United States-  I'm blessed because I get to work on the front line. This front line bleeds red, white, and blue.

We are all one shade. One race. One people.

I would rather be broke and live in a cardboard box with my kids than be rich and miserable married to a malignant narcissist.

Remember- PRIVILEGE IS REAL but also remember this IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT.
We all have a purpose in life.

That need to impress, to satisfy, to strive for acceptance, to succeed only creates a robot of perfectionism not a human with emotional needs.
Many celebrities have long learned wealth can't buy happiness nor love.
Many have gone on to lose sight of what matters most in their lives.

We all shall now say YES!! YES!! YES!!

I will honor your commitment and proclaim along with you - Say, YES to the world!

In closing, you noted it best- Thank you to those who helped or harmed you as they formed the world I'm delighted to live in....

God bless all! Stay safe!

Book Review: "History's Queen" By Mike Acquilina

"In History’s Queen, you’ll learn about the many ways the mother of humanity has left her mark on the great events of time, not only as we see them in the Bible, but also in pivotal events such as Fatima, the battle of Lepanto, and the plague."

Mike truly provided a fresh new perspective on the Virgin Mary Mother of God for all of the readers to enjoy.

It was quite unique to learn about the history and religious beliefs surrounding Mary from the biblical references showed why so many continue to follow her to this present day.

Some of what was explored included but was not limited too:

"Mary’s centrality in the Church Fathers’ view of history;
Mary’s role in preserving Byzantium during the explosive rise of Islam;
Marian devotion in medieval Ireland that inspired generations of great missionaries;
Mary’s role in military victories at Lepanto and Vienna; and
the message of peace received by three shepherd children in Fatima that sustained the world through a century of unprecedented violence and apostasy"

I thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful portrayal and look forward to more reads from this author.

Book Review: "Building Self Esteem" By Joseph Burgo

Shame can either tear us down or propell us forward into a new realm of understanding and acceptance.

Whether we choose to get bitter or better is our choice.

Choose wisely but don't fall for the gaslighting, the bullies, the haters, and the narcissists who put you through the ringer for their own betterment.

Know your worth and your value and step forth with a new sense of pride.

You must have boundaries and realize that not everyone is rowing the boat in the same direction.
In my area we have so much corruption, nepotism, and backstabbing that it's common to have someone speak kindly and in the same token back stab you all in the same day.

You must take everything with a grain of salt and understand that even the professionals can be more harmful that helpful.

Not everyone is great at what they do including professionals and many don't understand just how destructive and painful dealing with narcissism can be especially the malignant form from the DSM manual.

I have been counseling others successfully for many years since my own revelations and dealings with shame, guilt, fear, etc. from abusive relationships including having a narcissistic family, narcissist as parents, and marrying into the same.

It's a cycle of perpetual violence and abuse and it can be stopped but only if we choose to say it ends with us.

What I enjoyed here was the real life stories that were so relatable and transferrable to every day lives.

The personal reflection and the thoughtful advice went beyond someone with ADD, or bipolar, or even narcissistic tendencies.

As a professional you cannot help everyone nor can you save everyone from the pain because sometimes refusal comes before acceptance and forgiveness.
Moving forward requires an openness and level of understanding and acknowledgment that change is possible but only if we are willing to want change.

I've seen my fair share of situations in which defensive postures come out, language becomes offensive, the discussion turns violent.

In this work Joseph addresses such wild emotions and responses with professionalism and honor and it was a pleasure to read about his own experiences as well as his clients in addressing these issues successfully or not.

Thank you to Joseph, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "Called Out" By Paul Faris

What is your calling? Do you have an idea about your passion?

These are just some of the questions that are addressed in this phenomenal new work by Paula Faris that takes a close look into what makes us tick and why.

Burn out is usually experienced when we are working too hard rather than being smart and it's not always about working harder but being honest with oneself and doing what you love with passion.

That passion leads to new doors, new opportunities, new avenues to explore and develop that can truly entice us all to conquer our fears, anxieties, and heartbreaks.

Self doubt can wreak havoc however with Paula's advice readers can re-establish boundaries, utilize a new conversational style, and create a new balance in their every day lives.

Called Out will touch you in many ways -through mind, body, and soul- and leave you with a checklist of what you can do today to create a new calling.

Thank you to Paula, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "You Look So Much Better In Person" By Al Roker

This reminds me that we are all human and we all have a contribution to make in today's world.

Whether that requires a 'how to manual' is not truly necessary but it does require intellect, talent, openness, honesty, a bit of comedy, a pleasant personality, a great outlook, and a never ending tenacity to keep pushing forward.

I love the fact that Al discussed with sincerity his emotions because for men it's not always an easy thing to do as he's let his guard down to showcase his path to personal success which was brilliant and encouraging for all of us who are struggling today.

From co-parenting to starting his own company, to being able to do what so many don't-LISTENING- while trying to at least on the outside appear -socially involved- even though it's not always something we wish to conduct in our varied professions.

It's this knack to understand one another, to be social, to be outgoing, to be worthy of giving and receiving that's always fascinated me about him.

The fact he was of a different race may have created barriers, the fact he was overweight, and now has a shiny bald head also may have worked against him, but non of this matters because what he holds within outshines any obstacle he may face or has faced.  Never judge a book by its cover!

Al has always kept it real, he's the original, he's kept us laughing, smiling, and daring to challenge ourselves growing and developing beyond our comfort zone.
Labels such as just a 'weatherman' means nothing today when success comes calling.

Your goal is not to simply get through life but to live life and my friends he lives it well with dignity and comfort!

Much love to Al as I can't possibly know about racial inequality or the stressors that come with the job but I can relate to being authentic, possessing empathy, and understanding with compassion.

I thank him for always bringing a smile to my face -and keep being genuine- AL! We love it!!

Thank you to Al, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "How to Be Happy As a Rat in a Trash Can" By Don Pasco

No, really how happy are you?

Do tell because you know you can get bitter or you can get better.
You can go high or you can go low.

What I loved was the dedication, the informative tone, the demeanor of this author in expressing the most widely known but not always processed or executed information on maintaining happiness.

What would it take to make you happy?

Now, if you married a doozie like me - it's freedom, it's independence, it's the chance to rewrite the wrongs and live again -happily, peacefully, free!

For others it may be to simply turn on and tune in to Joel Osteen-an you get extra points- for this effort.

Whatever it's make sure you do your best to follow it through.

Stay in faith. Trust your judgment. Stay true to you.

Positivity is contagious and for good reason.

Surround yourself with those who will be supportive because it's not just about being lucky but being with the right crowd.

Happiness is more than just a number on the chart at your doctor's office.
It's about gratitude, it's about grace, it's about forgiveness, and it's about love.
Compassion, empathy, diversity are missing in today's world.

We are quick to judge others but do you truly understand, do you truly listen, can you possibly know if you don't walk in the other's shoes?

Don't be so judgmental, don't be so passionate to condemn, be open, be honest, be transparent.

BE YOU!

Love what Don has done here as it's a pleasure to read this self help version that brought smiles and warmth all around.

Thank you to Don, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "Nothing Can Hurt You" By Nicola Maye Goldberg

Unique Perspective! Inspired by a True Story that goes off the deep end..

This book had me loving and hating in both realms because it begins with the 1997 death of a college student but breaks off into those who found her, the journalists, the families involved, and the ultimate circle of violence.

It's confusing with multiple character perspectives that results in a mixed bag of character jumping scenes.

Obviously murders have a trickle down effect when it comes to who is unfortunately affected by such sad outcomes.

The author's categorization and genre also had me perplexed because it's based on a true story but operates based on an inspired story yet doesn't incorporate the story it's inspired by at all.

So, the ending was even more bizarre with the person who was murdered Sara Morgan in a pool....

I suppose voyeurism, obsession, and the like isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea so be careful with this one if you're squeamish.

The confession of Blake -her boyfriend- also is a mixed bag for me.

All in all it was simply a good read that held my attention but didn't really give me much beyond what we already new.

Thank you to Nicola, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "The Little Teashop in Tokyo" By Julie Caplin

Till we meet again...

Ahhh! Love is grand unless of course you're Fiona!
Ten years ago she had her heart broken by good ol' Gabe.
Now she has a shot at a second chance for love in the beautiful location of Japan.

Will she want to rekindle this relationship after all that's happened.

Fiona-the passionate photographer-meets Haruka-the lovely Japanese teashop owner- and the powers that be are something to behold.

This is actually the sixth in the series for Julie Caplin with the Romantic Escapes becoming more and more elevated in their beautiful scenic surrounds.

Love is in the air -or so we hope- as sometimes what's lost can be found!

Thank you to Julie, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "The Black Swan of Paris" By Karen Robards

"A world at war. A beautiful young star. A mission no one expected."

Never have I read a historical fiction as invigorating, dynamic, and powerful in every aspect such as this new work by Karen Robards.

Two protagonists are about to collide on the front stage during WWII at a time of great uncertainty and devastation that continues to escalate with each passing day. One is a spymaster while the other is a beautiful cabaret singer in her own right.

Tensions build in Paris 1944 as we ponder upon the baronness  as well as the relationship with Max; the strong yet determined soldier whom she seems smitten over.

Lillian aka the Maman as she was known; was full of surprises that truly elevated this to a whole new level in terms of excitement level.

Who knew the cooking a meal could result in such serious and drastic consequences?

But I digress as we learn that there's so much more than meets the eye here with true heartbreaks from the past that have festered and stirred till now.

Confronting the past, renewing the present, hopeful for the future is what this book creates and stirs up.

These characters were so active staying in perpetual motion in terms of importance to one another.
Emmy the estranged sis is back with a vengeance and determination that ends with spectacular fashion.

The emotional toll and the linguistic fluidity of this historical fictional piece was just superb.

I couldn't get enough as the descriptive nature of the setting combined with the tensions and stressors of hiding from the Nazi's while they gathered everyone up including Lillian was truly horrific.
The resistance movement had one mission to silence the victims!

Yet, they know not the determined force and tornado that's rolling through with Emma joining forces with her sister.

A magnificent piece that truly deserves all the accolades it will receive now and in the future.
I'm honored to have played a role in helping get the word out through Harlequin's book blog Summer 2020 Tour.

Thank you to Karen, Harlequin and Mira, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

This is going to be one of  the 'must read books' of the year! Mark my words!!!

Book Review: "Crushing It" By Lorelei Parker

Sweet and tart like a good hot apple pie!!!

What is cooking up is more than anyone bargained for in Crushing It -the new works- from Lorelei Parker!

What results is one heck of a fast paced action -chick lit-contemporary fictional romance that was so enjoyable to read.

After all who wouldn't want two men fighting over them but not one that's narcissistic and egotistical.

NO THANKS!!

Lorelei manages to show all sides and dimensions of each character and with a crushing blow to the emotional department because at one point I was leaning towards a relationship with Tristan but then I wasn't and next I knew it was Alfie or was it...

UGHH...Romance is so hard to comprehend but when it works it works so good!
The back and forth worked well with the plot here and Sierra was so relatable with her anxieties in trying to overcome public speaking roles.

Sure, Tristan was a has been in college for her love interest but he came back with a vengeance during this 'tell all' diary bar slam journal event that pitted one against the other in truth or consequences scenario.

Truly a unique perspective -especially with the bar owner-Alfie- and his own past history.

A wonderful new piece by Lorelei that I hope you find enjoyable.

Thank you to Lorelei, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "Elixir" By Charles Atkins

"Dr Frank Garfield has found a cure for cancer, but cut-throat businesses are looking to profit on the research and don't care who they trample over to do so."

Cut throat is quite the use of words here because it truly is exactly that in a nut shell.

Everyone wants a piece of the pie and are willing to do anything -ANYTHING-to get it!

When it comes down to killing one of your own; it's done without a second thought; which goes to show just how ruthless, heart wrenching, and cold these characters truly are -each with their own separate reasons.

Leona and Dalton are the ones to watch as something just isn't right with them and hangs on you long after they're gone.

Thank you to Charles, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "Sarah's List" By Elizabeth Gunn

Chilling! Shocking! Magnificent!

What more can one say other than this?

It's truly a situation in which nobody wants the bad guy(s) to win but with drugs comes scandals when placed in the wrong hands it can even lead to death(s).

A call comes in for a senior living center and Sarah and Bogey are sent to process it all.

"A car chase ending with the murder of a senior living center employee draws Detective Sarah Burke into a chilling case where her career - and her life - are soon at risk."

The driver -Enrique Lopez-was killed-shot twice in the head-left for dead in a van.

Who would want to harm a man that did so much good for the elderly in his community?
Was this a set up?

Could there be a cover up or is there something far worse -an insider job....

For the love ...this was wild, hairy, scary all wrapped into one.

That type of book that sends chills up and down your spine.

A real page turner with every episode leading to another shocking twist and ultimately an ending fit for a King or Queen.

Well, along the way I learned about the medulla oblongata-controls breathing and the multiple myeloma with high creatinine and calcium with all the med examiner's information.

So, let's add informative as well to the list of goodies here.

A truly fab read coming out in August 2020!

Book Review: "Good Mourning" By Theresa Caputo

I don't believe this was coincidental that I came across Theresa Caputo's Good Mourning two days before my niece's four year anniversary of her passing. I've been a fan of Theresa's for many years & almost had a reading several times.

I've enjoyed reading everyone of her books and in fact went above and beyond to capture them all to read at my local libraries or online.
It's no secret I've been to several of her shows before and after this tragic event  that took my niece's life.
https://www.dailycommercial.com/news/article_daf0f51c-8d96-5214-b4cc-bf04898a27ed.html

I was so comforted in reading this novel on the anniversary of the exact day of her passing as it was so welcoming as we're all still grieving her momentous loss.

This book isn't just words as it heals from within as you're reading every sentence. It brings comfort and joy in celebrating the memory of our loved ones and moving forward in the grieving process to a healing stage in which we can then give back.

Several of the stories that Theresa shared were not only personal but relatable in that it felt like the same page from my life.

When You're On The Rebound -was one such example- that discussed Spirit wanting us to know that there's value to what you do in your job but that this shouldn't define who you are as a person.
So much of what we do is defined by our labels-mother, wife, husband, father, son, daughter, welder, carpenter, etc.

We need to remember the bare essentials, the back to basics, the living better not bitter motto.
In a world in which hate and anger is being idolized by one side -we need to go high- and not be a part of the madness in helping one another to heal those internal scars we all carry.

Reestablishing your ability to trust others and trust your own judgement above all else isn't easy yet Theresa gives us this option to explore and develop on our own.

I've always loved when couples can divorce amicably and still love from afar while raising kids or even long after the nest is empty. What a pleasure to be cordial and appreciate one another yet not have to fight or bicker daily.

This is what I'm talking about when I say we can all learn the lessons they were meant to teach us.
No-God is not the enemy- he didn't take away a loved one to make you suffer- they have gone on to more detailed experiences and you will one day see them all again.

I've also found peace in strengthening my faith in God especially the Virgin Mary.
Yes, I'm that gal that would sit under her stained glass windows feeling comforted by her presence. Wearing her image on my bracelets from St. Patrick's Cathedral from NYC or simply saying a prayer to her daily.

I'm so glad Theresa mentioned this connection to faith especially in light of the current stressors in all our lives.

I will note not all religion is foul proof as I'm a Catholic who volunteered as the only female usher when the men of the group became worried there jobs were at jeopardy in allowing me in to this all male group. So they pushed me out literally and took my collection basket from me during mass.
Yet, I will not cower, nor hide, nor be silenced and that courage and tenacity only gets stronger with each of these moments in time.

So with this noted-"I'd like you to make one leap of faith and trust that the outcome will be positive."
Or as Annette proudly notes," I've learned we all have crosses to carry. I've learned who my true friends and family are."

On losing one's identity- was another such subject that I enjoyed because it underscores the loss of oneself.

I was in a marriage in which I was a prisoner in my own home. I had lost my voice in the relationship. I went along to get along. We were ultimately two ships passing in the night.
He was a malignant narcissist and left me bankrupt, homeless, LT unemployed without income assets, alimony, or child support.

It took me 4 attorneys to finally get child support and try to reestablish myself , rebuild, and flourish in a more positive light.

I've chased my dreams as Theresa mentioned for the past 10 years since our separation and subsequent divorce. The reason being I'm unable to get employed after 20 yrs of raising kids -even with a dual masters-and 20 years volunteering having earned the Points of Light Award.

As Theresa notes," When you lose your identity, Spirit says that you lose part of your soul. You lose who you are. "

Terri's story hit a nerve much like Annette's as both were extremely familiar to me.

In Terri's case she went from living in one of the nation's wealthiest towns to living on welfare and feeding her children from food pantries. She was living the same life I was except for the fact she was able to secure employment to the tune of having four jobs at once.

When she sold her engagement ring for $80 to feed her family for the week it brought me to tears because I did the exact same and it killed me.
To have to cash in your children's e-bonds to feed them was something I'd never thought I'd have to do either.
It's these stories of survival including Theresa's own story of empowerment through her divorce, as an empty nester, with her daughter's wedding and beyond that truly touched me deeply.
I needed this book like I needed air , water, oxygen to live.

Thankfully my prayers were answered and I still hold hope that one day we will meet again in ACNJ or nearby to get a reading.

Thank you to Theresa Caputo, her publisher Harper One, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle as this book is well on its way to being another Best Seller.

Book Review: Snow By John Banville

That moment you have an overtly friendly priest...who may just be a little too friendly!

Father Tom Lawless has just been found dead in the library after a terrible fall down the stairs, but he's not receiving much sympathy for his passing..

Many of those who knew him honestly don't have one kind word about him in their thoughtful reflections yet readers wonder if there's more to this story.

Who would want FatherTomTit dead?

Mrs. Osborne seems to have been the one who found him-so he she possibly offer any further details?

One by one the tide is turning and more and more individuals are being found dead.

Do we have a serial killer on our hands?

What if the priest got into the minds as well as the hearts of those he offended?

What if they were 'driven' to perform acts of violence not only against themselves but others?

Well, safe to say there's one person who is pleading that she's a sound sleeper but there's something that may have gone down or shall we say 'bump in the night?'

This was pure thrills from start to finish. The direction the author took this was wonderful and full of twist and turns all along the way.

Thank you to John, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "All Stirred Up" By Brianne Moore

Imagine getting back with an ex boyfriend as you try to save your family's restaurant business...

Say it ain't so-Susan?

What could Chris possibly offer you now after all this time...

Sure, he's a chef and quite popular but beyond this -he broke your heart once- he may just do it twice.

Or will he...

What if they could reunite and reclaim that once lost love?

What ifs....

Well, good news there's a bun in the oven and it's not what you think or it's depending on how you think.

Without ruining this lovely romance it's a feel good book that literally left her in awe!

Loved every minute of this new work by Brianne Moore.

Thank you to Brianne, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "An Inconvenient Woman" By Stephanie Buelens

Who knew so much excitement surrounds the life of an ex-spouse and a sin eater in the mix...

Well, meet Claire -she's downright convinced her ex-husband killed her daughter and she's not about to let him get away with murder.

I've never heard of a 'sin-eater' but  apparently it's a contractor for hire who specializes in cleaning up inconvenient situations and does so outside the rule of law...right Sloane?

It's a crime that could escalate when a woman scorned is involved ...

So all this sex trafficking and brothel stuff is something that fits that bill and sadly it leads to a very strong and deep rooted secret that continues to stay hidden...long after it's revealed.

Shocker alert!

Thank you to Stephanie, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Book Review: "All About the Story" By Leonard Downie

"At a time when the role of journalism is especially critical, the former executive editor of the Washington Post writes about his nearly 50 years at the newspaper and the importance of getting at the truth."

Beginning with his internship to his pioneering investigative reporting and where the world of journalism is today was quite intriguing.

The insight Leonard was able to provide readers was invaluable as we now approach the fake news era and lack of truth and transparency with media playing the role of opinionated rather than factual based reporters.

Sadly, my own local news has been selling this propaganda in controlling the narrative and allowing this hatred and anger to fester in the minds of its viewers.

Or as noted," Partisan media dispense malicious propaganda disguised as news. Local newspapers shrinking and dying across the country, as rapacious hedge funds buy many of those still standing and drain their remaining assets."

"Increasing numbers of authoritarian regimes around the world are preventing their citizens from knowing the truth. A worrying proportion of American politics and media figures appear to be trying to do same thing here."

"For journalists, it is, more than ever, all about the story-getting it straight, and making a difference."

We cannot continue down this path of mixing opinion with facts and blurring the lines of truth v lies.

It's the job of every journalist and reporter to get the facts, to produce the truth, to give an unbiased story and to be fair and impartial in providing such information for its viewing audience.

I refuse to watch the local news for this reason and now only get tidbits that I come across online via scrolling sites like Twitter or Facebook.

Rarely do I offer an opinion because if it goes against the grain the trolls, bots, and supporters of such insanity come out in full force and I spend more time than I care too having to block them all.

It's sad that the rule of force is causing many qualified intellectuals to cower and hide because of fear of such retaliation and threats not to mention the buying off for silence articles.

My word-what has our world come too- We are no better than the third world countries and this level of corruption and lack of transparency from the GOP and others in highest offices is going against everything our democracy stands for.

Americans deserve better! Please continue to do your jobs and provide Americans the truth! We have a right to know!
