"Miracles are not without their price."
A wonderful new thriller by Jennifer McMahon has one grasping at miracles, seeking granted wishes, and taking away lives as payment.
Are the Bradenbury Springs cursed?
What is up with the 'X' girls and where is Jax? What happened to Lexi?
First off this starts with some unbelievable occurrences and situations that make it hard to get into or at least for me.
Jax is a social worker, her sister Lexi is mentally ill, her sister wouldn't answer her phone after 9 calls were placed to her.
The girls were separated for several reasons top of them being Lexi who has bipolar disorder received her grandmother's estate (vacation house).
Then suddenly Lexi drowns in the pool as an accomplished swimmer making things more unbelievable for the readers. We also learn that in addition to this there's a connection to another timeline that goes all the way back to 1900's from 2019 time frame.
As this happens we learn that Ethel Monroe who hoped for a baby suffered from self harm during this era that wasn't common during such period.
Lightbulbs are missing. The house is growing darker by the minute. Things are coming out of the pool.
This land of the living and back into the pool was bizarre yet, this is Sparrow Crest after all and the pool may just be needed to keep a girl or two alive.
"Open your eyes the dead have nothing to offer."
So, who took the lightbulbs? Why?
Will the X girls stay together, will anyone become locked in a looney-bin, will life ever go back to normal?
Well, there's much to be said for more than one person being dead, and more than one person being side by side alone but together.
This was an interesting yet unusual experience as it's more supernatural (spirit world) than thriller.
In the end, water is the collective being of shared hungers and loathing.
The narration was good as well as the writing and all in all it was a solid three stars for me.
Thank you to Jennifer McMahon, the pub, Netgalley for this Audio in exchange for this honest review.
