Book Review: "The Great Gatsby" By F. Scott Fitzgerald

Pleasure driven , lust fulfilled, egotistical emotional affairs highlight this well known classic written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

While much to do about nothing has been made about this work I've only briefly addressed it twice in my youth and now as a grown woman.

The story is quite interesting when you understand that it's not based on any real life events or characters during this Prohibition Era.

Yet, for all its madness we find a bunch of individuals who are living it up, enjoying life, and creating havoc with wild parties, late night drinks, and doing so while living literally across the water from each other. The fact that Jay Gatsby bought a home across the water from his former past love who since had married five years later and carried on in her life seemed a bit much for my taste.

In addition, not only did Jay Gatsby buy a home to stalk his former love but he then went to the trouble to get reintroduced to Nick's cousin Daisy by using his relationship with him. As if this isn't enough to entice the romance he then tells Daisy to tell her husband Tom that she's always loved Jay.

Ok, this alpha male would never fly by me but if money's your thing and that's all you care about surely the fact that he made his wealth illegally during a time that many were bootlegging (hint) is not quite earning his keep if it's dirty money.

As for the initial reason for separating it was due in large part to the war which in the interim Daisy married and now we see the aftermath of those consequences as she herself admitted her unhappiness.

Fast forward a bit and we find a situation that's getting quite out of hand. The driver of one of the vehicles ran over Myrtle the mistress of another one of the men in this story. Myrtle is also married to a man named George.

As the story proceeds we find that the heat is rising in many directions. The parties are underway, the drinking has increased, the sexual tension is dynamic.

Gatsby and West Egg are a combo package but could he truly ever leave behind Daisy?
The discrepancy over the driving incident results in a homicide/suicide which ultimately affects more than just one family or relationship as the case may be here.

All this for some heavy hitters, horny players and or golfing pro's, and some wealthy elites who felt they could probably buy their way to whatever shall be wanted, needed, and ultimately desired.

After all -who could turn away a man or woman of such high caliber wealth and prestige?
If only there was more romance, swooning, and heartfelt emotional appeal rather than the jump in bed -wait for me- wait for it- feature length scenario.
If you're a strong feminine role model and prefer the same in your reading this may not be the book for you.

All in all this was written well, it didn't drag for me, and went rather smoothly across the board.

Another great new audio with wonderful narration that framed the story and created a new depth that wasn't easily accessible via print format.

Thank you to the publisher, author, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
