This was a hard one to review because it felt backwards in my mind with multiple pov's between Elizabeth and Heather.
It messes not only with your mind but your heart as we ultimately feel sorry for Elizabeth because of an affair but also her own personal struggles with mental illness and personality trait disorders that are controlling her life and that of her children.
It's also difficult to embrace knowing she's got a father who seems to have a large debt to another character only to learn it's related to something different.
Add to this the notion of sexual favors, forceful sex, and affairs and you see where I'm coming from with the heavy topics and subject matter.
I'm one of those who has to solve puzzles like those on Wheel of Fortune from the bottom up (No Joke). I'm also one who has difficulty in answering Jeopardy questions based on how they are written. If you're in my group then you'll understand that this was written in a way that made it increasingly difficult to follow.
In fact, it began with very little foundation to build upon but rather one of those action packed not evidence based.
It proceeded to go into twist and turns with pieces thrown at readers to join together.
The issues with Lucas, Heather, Piotr (Uncle of Elizabeth), and the entire connection to the Copper Lodge and it's final demise was all over the top crazy.
Of course her delusion and narcissism may have contributed to Elizabeth's overall actions so there's that but it's not referenced till later on (much later).
The manner in which the father secured money for his debts through use of 'labour' was also a tough issue.
Agata and Lucas also left me with a harder than normal time to process because of the nature of the 'allegations' and 'actions.'
It was all just too much for me.
I hope you enjoy!
Thank you to Clare, the pub, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
