Book Review: "Next Year In Havana" By Chanel Cleeton

Upon receiving an earlier ARC (The Last Train to KeyWest) by Chanel and glancing over her prior novels I noticed this was missing and upon reading the premise I knew this was one I had to read.

I'm so glad I did because this truly took me to another place -specifically Havana Cuba-during the Cuban Rebellion against Batista with three sisters (Beatriz, Marissa, and Elisa) with the latter having an affair with a rebellion.

Fast forward to a new time and place in 2017 Miami with the granddaughter Marisol who learns of her grandmother's love affair and subsequent private letters between her lover and we uncover a treasure trove of romance, loss, heartbreak, and memories.

Marisol is also starting up almost where her family's past stood still as she too has similar fate with Luis so she understand the complexity of the relationship between Pablo & Elisa.

Sadly, it was a time of great turmoil, lives were literally broken up, and dreams were squashed.

Miguel was the result of such a union of love and loss but the remarkable twist and truth will shock you to the core.

It's so sad to uncover that Miguel went without a biological father but yet has been surrounded by love and support during the interim and beyond.

Sacrifice, Love, Family, and Change...Change from within is required now!

As noted by the author-both men had revolutionary political leanings and especially without the blessings of the family because of their current positions.

What a wonderful, eye opening, splendid read that truly underscores the political climate, historical challenges, and romantic triumphs that were blended to become a magical moment in the end.

Thank you to Hoyt Library for this copy during these Covid Pandemic times of uncertainty. It's so wonderful to have limited offerings but at least we can now call in to check out books. For this we are all grateful for some limited normalcy.
