This is one of those books that you either love or hate depending on where you stand on the issue of rape, incest, abortion, and woman's rights. It's a powerful story of a Nurse Power who is trying and failing to assist and save every woman in childbirth.
The problem lies not with the woman persay but the male counterparts forcing these women to give birth to multiple children that are simply taxing upon the woman's bodies. Add insult to injury many of these women were victims of sexual abuse, incest, and beyond and it's truly tragic to witness this play out in books during a time of great tragedy that was marred in more than just abuse during its time.
Woman's rights have come a long way but we are a far cry from it being over and in fact we must do more, work together, stay united, and carry out our mission to not be silenced.
This is what it takes to continue forward, to make progress, to be united in cause not for applause.
I commend the author on not only bringing to light the pandemic of 1918 but also WWI, the societal pressures, contraception issues, and sadly maternal mortality which hovered around 15% during this historical time frame.
Thank you to Emma, the publisher, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
