Book Review: "The Eighth Wonder of the World" By Bertrand Hebert

Who was Andr Roussimoff?

If you grew up in the early 70's and 80's you're in good company as we got to see this 'Gentle Giant' on the wrestling platform make his debut.

However, the man behind the scenes was quite a loner, was a heavy closet drinker, and was rather moody according to those who knew him personally and professionally.

He may have fooled all of us with his acting skills on stage but in person he couldn't fool them and in fact many of his Hollywood 'stardom' moments were short lived.

From his humble beginnings in France to his later years in North Carolina on US soil he found a way to wow the crowd and entertain us all even in severe pain.
He suffered gravely from spinal stenosis as well as from acromegaly among other things ie. heavy sweating.

He was a man of many talents but often was overlooked and taunted solely for his 'gigantic' size.

I never knew he had kids or even a family as many said he was unable to conceive so it was a new revelation to learn of this new life beyond the ring.
Tragically he died at a young age from his disorder in the early 90's but we never forgot his 'legendary' appeal.

The ending was said as the details this author provides were excruciating to read from the hotel to the cremation and later in his will.

I had no idea all of this extra biography was part of this persona that was larger than life itself.

A great read!

Highly Recommend!
