Book Review: "The Exiles" By Christina Baker Kline

Social hiearchies. Wild savages. Tamed beasts. Hard knocks life.

This has it all with a fine woven piece between historical and fiction that leaves readers gasping for more.

The Exiles brings it with superb and vivid characters that you can't help but feel empathy for during their tumultous times.

With slave ships and the consequences of trying to survive we follow the journey of three such wonderful individuals Evangeline, Hazel, and Mathinna and their personal stories from growing up with alcoholic parents to finding their own way during colonization and so much more.
The climax of the story centers upon the relationship or lack thereof between Mr. Cecil Whitstone and Ruby daughter of Evangeline Stokes.

This latter piece was truly the icing on the cake and sealed the deal as her mom was poor, alone, but carried with her a love of books that went on forever and in some ways was passed down to the next generation.

Christina made us walk right along with this powerful read and never swayed from the emotional pull and tug of each action or inaction within the story.

I hope everyone can get a chance to experience this beautiful new novel.

Another fab read for curbside pickup marathon reads during this pandemic & in the middle of Labor Day Weekend.
