Book Review: "When No One is Watching" By Alyssa Cole

“I need you to channel the confidence of a mediocre white man.”

― Alyssa Cole, When No One is Watching

Sydney is a recently unemployed African female on the verge of a mystery concerning her vanishing neighbors from Brooklyn and decides to conduct a tour about their African Heritage.

She decides to allow Theo her neighbor join in as her assistant and together these two uncover truths, revelations, and hardships together.

Life is fragile as we all know but life is also extremely difficult and soul defining and this book covers all those issues with clarity upon our diversity and acceptance of each other.

Humanity is at a crossroads. Our infrastructure is crumbling. Our country is falling and we are on the verge of losing our democracy. Social norms and indifferences are at a dead standstill with the rights of our fellow countrymen and women being tossed to the side.

Women's rights. Voting rights. Racial segregation. It's all vital to our country and we need to stop arguing. Get back to basics. Utilize communication while accepting our past mistakes and history.

In Sydney's case "revitalization" is being disguised as a far greater disaster known as 'eminent domain' resulting in ghost towns.

Condo's are being built in highly sought after locations without regard to property ownership, rights of citizens, or even rights of the individual by those with wealth, prestige, and power.

Sublime loans to minorities led to the housing bubble and or crisis.

But banks now own the land and the biggest lender to these new businesses are these banks.

Where did all the people go who left these communities? Is it a conspiracy?

What is up with the take over of the community garden?

How can anyone attempt to get a loan when we have no living wages?

What if one was to be tricked into giving up their rights of ownership for these housing loans that promise such grand opportunities of advancement?

Could there be more to this garden than meets the eye both literally and figuratively?

Buried secrets! BREAK AND REBUILD! Marginalized people can't continue to disappear-action is needed to end this insanity....

A great new read that if you're not careful may burn to the ground!

Thank you to Bibliotheca for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
