The Last Exit is a uniquely crafted sci-fi dystopian with pieces that can easily relate both to the current state of affairs as well as the future realm.
What intrigued me was this idea of 'Timeless Treatment' give to kids of parents who reach 65 years of age. The parent must then exit out so as to save these kids from spongiform encephalitis or risk the children' to certain death.
The mindset one must be in to achieve this high standard was quite intriguing as I didn't have time to read the synopsis which for me worked out fine.
Jen Lu (detective) was tasked to uncover the truth this black market scenario surrounding Eden and this rare disease but her Captain seems adamant that she be held silent and she's forced into suspension from active duty .There's several exciting scenes involving mysterious circumstances surrounding co-ops, deaths, implants, fake treatments, counterfeit activity, and arrests.
Much of the above surrounds supporters of DC 18 and this urgent need to link Archambault and or Teko Teko to all of the above actions.
Will everyone find what they're looking for and will Jen get her suspension lifted?
Remember now, Jen is only in her mid 30's with a rough childhood past so all of this weighs heavily upon her conscious.
The casual nature of her relationship with Zach is tested when he questions her lack of concern for her mother's failing health with dementia.
This turns into questionable drug making operations that are contributing to the sudden deaths from encephalitis. Les is a close friend who had no knowledge of this entire operation so imagine the surprise on that end of the spectrum.
As this case begins to take shape we see plenty of illegal activity and suspense ratcheting up to full throttle action that warrants this five star rating.
With this cleverly situated plot is allows readers to wonder if Jen will ever catch the person responsible while also saving her own hide.
The ending was superb and keeps readers eagerly awaiting the next in this series.
Thank you to Michael Kaufman, the publisher Crooked Lane Books, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
