Quarantines, human experiments, antibodies, pathogens, and so much more exist to tickle the fancy outside of NYC on this island ( one of two in the East River) surrounded by literally and figuratively troubled waters. According to Wikipedia : "North and South Brother Islands are a pair of small islands located in New York City's East River between the mainland Bronx and Rikers Island. North Brother Island was once the site of a hospital, but is now uninhabited and designated as a bird sanctuary. It had long been privately owned, but it was purchased by the city in 2007."
North Brother Island is the central focus of this richly crafted new novel by Shelley Nolden.
The idea focuses upon finding antibodies and harvesting them in order to eliminate viruses like the Spanish Flu and other pandemics that have plagued not only our nation but our world.
However, there's so much going on here that it's a hard follow as Cora our main lead is imprisoned by contagions and the doctors who imprisoned her.
Meanwhile, Finn (explorer) arrives on the island and immediately is captivated by Cora. He wants to assist her uncover her past while exploring his own genetic makeup and imprint on the land.
The goal was simplistic enough but veered into disturbing territory and the idea of ' human mutts' who were made up of a multitude of nationalities and ethnicities comes to form.
All in all it was certainly unique but not my cup of tea.
Thank you to Shelley, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange fort this honest review.
