“Wilkey is another malignant narcissist, and one with a messiah complex. A charismatic bigot who draws in his followers with words of harmony, peace, personal success, and contentment”
― J.D. Robb, Faithless in DeathHello Everyone,
Let's begin with the facts and only the facts. The truth of the matter is a young sculptor/artist was brutally killed. A young wealthy woman called it in. Her parents are members of a white supremacy group.
Ok, are you still with me so far?
Now, the problems are several. This is a case of seeking motive while being led on a while goose chase. The case is eventually solved albeit the last few pages of the book.
It was long, tedious, drawn out, and dragged way too much between each character. The back and forth commentary was too much. The lack of investigation with warrants being tossed like candy was bothersome. The fact that assumptions without much in terms of concrete facts and or evidence was troubling.
I'm a life long fan of Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb and will always be there. However, this for me was a difficult read (especially for us speed readers) as it was very time consuming with much to do about nothing scenarios that were tossed around.
The finale in the end with just the last few pages was the best part when we finally got to the meat of the situation and not the hearsay, the accusations, the third party allegations.
Surely, the father (Wilkey) appeared to be the major player. However, there's a hidden component in this one. Another family member is actively engaged in this human trafficking, assault, abductions, power grab scenario.
What we have here is a person that appears as the victim who is actually the one in charge. I can't go into the overall specifics but it's safe to say that the monster in disguise isn't who you might first assume.
Money, power, prestige, glory, attention, adulation, praise - it's all there - it's all at stake. It's all this one individual can think about- and murder- was the only way to achieve the goal.
Thank you to Osterhout Free Library for another addition of Curbside Pickup Marathon Reads. This one took a bit longer than expected but it was still juicy.
