Book Review: "The Queen's Secret" By Melissa de la Cruz

The Queen's Secret is the second in this luscious series by Melissa de la Cruz.

In this fantasy we have many of the same players as the first but they're not as romantically involved with Queen Lilac (princess of Renovia by birth -Queen of Montrice) and Cal (Caledon) Hunt (the apprentice). Their relationship in particular stood out as being the central focus but seemed lackluster with him doing the chasing while Lilac seemed to enjoy the thrill of being chased. King Hansen of course is married to Queen Lilac but more for play title rather than love. He wants an heir and perhaps that can be worked out later.

The heir to the throne is always on the back burner as kids are another of those taboo topics but in this case that was dealt with in an odd 'pass the torch' style that felt jarring and off rather than connected to the feel of the initial plot.

While I understand the ending it left me disengaged and wanting something more as the first in this series was more free flowing and felt as if it had stronger footing and substance to support the medieval fantasy.

I did enjoy the black magic, the witch's brew, the horse race, and the birds as there's always plenty of taboo going on here.

All in all it was a solid three but I wish there was more involvement with the other characters like Rema, the King, and others.

Thank you to my local library for another curbside pickup marathon read.
