Book Review: "Not My Boy" By Kelly Simmons

Bizarre! Disturbing! Distracting Scenario!

Not My Boy is one of those books that I couldn't place into one definitive category of appeal.
For me it wasn't the writing as much as the plot that seemed to be all over the place with no real power grab until the end when the killer was revealed.

We have plenty of slow sizzles that seem to fade quickly with Hannah and her sis Hillary.
Hannah is recently divorced and moving with her son Miles (12yo) who's an outcast doing strange things to animals. She decides to live right next door to her Hillary, her husband Ben, and their daughter Morgan who is almost twelve.

The sisters mom Eva lives nearby in this Philadelphia when a young gal Liza Harris; age 6 goes missing.

Plenty of creatures come crawling out of the woodwork under investigation by the local police but the real sleuths are the two sisters.

Meanwhile, they themselves have some hidden agendas as they keep secrets from one another to protect their own families.

There's also some valuable interest in the poker club, book clubs, and other neighborhood events plus these drinking parties.

What's up with this restraining order? The affair? The DUI?
Barret Smith is a name that has frequently come up - so we wonder what is his significance to everything we see and hear?

Gift giving has also been suggested as a possible m.o. here so we might want to check it out.
All in all this was even more disturbing when we learn of an event from high school involving the sisters but mostly Hannah who witnessed something horrific but never reported it that involves sexual abuse. Instead, Hannah contacted Hillary after the incident and questioned what she thought she should do and her sister suggested leaving immediately as her sister was under the influence.

The entire situation just rubbed me the wrong way and in the end I can only hope Miles and others involved took home some life lessons learned.

Thank you to Kelly, the pub, NetGalley, and Amazon Kindle for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
