Book Review: "True Story" By Kate Reed Petty

This is one of those bouncing narratives in the he said/she said world of sexual accusations during high school years.

The characters to me didn't mature enough for my liking and the story was very fast paced utilizing a variety of formats including found footage of college applications, templates of film scripts, and a male privilege narrative that didn't bode well with me.

The YA vibe in this contemporary piece has been done before so it didn't seem fresh but it was a good read and did keep my attention but it just felt too much fluff and not enough substance.

If you like short chapters with a few statements and bouncing between characters this is for you as it felt like I was reading texts and not following the story or falling in love with the plot.

The setting was interesting but the idea that a book was sent to Italy as fiction to wrap it all up was too bland because the reality of whether or not it's true can be seen in a multitude of viewpoints.
As the story goes we have a young private high school aged girl who was raped by two lacrosse players while drunk & passed out in the front seat of a car.

After getting bullied she attempts suicide unsuccessfully and now many questions arise from Alice's statement that was held firmly up to the light by the golden gal Hailey ( a skilled writer in her own right).

Now Nick (2nd narrator) is on scene to add his share of information to the mix. Nick is the scapegoat lying on behalf of his friends Max and Richard accused of the sexual abuse allegations.

We fast forward the process to 15 yrs later with a documentary in the works.
Richard of course wants the production cancelled and will do anything to shut it down.

However, the show must go on but it leaves readers wondering with two shady narrators who appear drunk and inaccurate -just who's telling the truth.

It's not my thing as noted but my loss may be your gain.

I do hope you enjoy this as variety is the spice of life.

Thank you Bibliotheca for this e-read in exchange for this honest review.
